  • Gods and Kings adds 3 new scenarios to Civilization 5

Gods and Kings adds 3 new scenarios to Civilization 5. The scenario is in particular interesting: A steam punk scenario that takes you into an alternative reality. But let's talk about the scenarios in their order.

    Fall of Rome

Play as either Eastern Rome or Western Rome trying to fend off the barbarians OR as one of the barbarians themselves. (Webhallen, Official) Both Eastern and Western Rome have to pick Social Politics, that have negative effects. This is supposed to reflect the political decay and decadence. The Social Politics make also the Barbarians stronger to make the struggle for survival harder.

    Into the Renaissance

Grow your medieval kingdom into one of the great nations of Renaissance Europe, fending off outside invasions from Mongols and Ottoman Turks and fighting the religious wars of the Crusades and Reformation! (Webhallen, Official) This scenario mainly focuses on spreading religion under leadership of a major European empire.

    Empires of the Smoky Skies

Build flying airships and huge tractor-like tanks from the unique tech tree of this Victorian science-fiction scenario, and use them to spread your empire across the pre-industrial world. (Webhallen, Official)

Empires of the Smoky Skies is a scenario in a Victorian science fiction style, also known as Steam Punk. Empires of the Smoky Skies plays on random maps and alters the tech tree, heavily. The tech tree projects into an alternative present and future, right from Steam Power. All technologies up to Steam Power are given to the player. The alternative technologies group into three alternative eras: The Steam Era, the Aviation Era, and the Future. Empires of the Smoky Skies features new units, buildings, technologies, and resources like Luborium and Aetherium that makes things fly and help you to dominate the world. To dominate the world, you start with 3 settlers, 2 Scouts, and 2 Land Ironclads, which will help you against the Barbarians

How to win the Empires of the Smokey Skies

    Scenario Description

Greetings to you, renowned Captain of Science and industry! The advent of steam power has revolutionized the world. It is a time of discovery, fueled by newfound resources and brilliant inventions. Great airships trek across the skies, marking their trails with black smoke. Civilizations are propelled towards a bright future, but competition is fierce. Resources are scare, and technological secrets are carefully guarded. You and your rivals must expand your empires across the globe to meet growing needs in the name of progress. Can you harness the power of steam technology and bring your people to greatness?

    Victory Conditions

Empires compete in the domains of Military, Culture, Industry, Commerce, and Labor. Be the best in a domain to earn an Honorable Title. To see the species of each Title, and monitor your progress, check the League of Empires screen. The first empire to hold three or more Titles wins the game.

    Special Rules

Players begin with all technologies up to Steam Power. The tech tree after Steam Power has been altered significantly, giving players the ability to construct Airships, Landships, and new buildings. Barbarians ("Luddites") are enabled, but do not have access to advanced units. Social Politics have been rearranged. Religion has been disabled, as have religious and militaristic city states.

To win in Empires of the Smoky Skies, you have to be awarded by the League of Empires three of five Honorable Titles and hold them for five consecutive turns. The titles are unlocked by certain technologies and are in the following domains:

    • Defender of Progress: Have the most land and airships
    • Grand Philanthropist: Have the most World and National wonders
    • Captain of Industry: Have the most productive city
    • Lord of Refinement: Have the most adopted social policies
    • Master of Wealth: Have the highest total gross gold income

Who leads the Empires of the Smokey Skies

Empires of the Smoky Skies has five unique fractions, that struggle for domination of the world. The fraction leaders "all deliver their veiled and not-so-veiled threats in a decidedly Victorian tone [as text-only messages]. The text-only messages appear under canvas paintings of the world leaders, mustachioed or with goggles. (The Verge) These paintings and text only style is in contrast to the animated and speaking leaders of the standard game. But it shows modders how to not only add new civilization with limited resources, but also how to add new win condition, and how to turn of religion, which was just added on Civilization 5 by Gods and Kings. Here is the list of the five Empires of the Smokey Skies fractions:

The gallery of the Empires of the Smokey Skies

Here are all the known images from the Empires of the Smokey skies and did not found a place in above article. Most of these come from German reviews:

    Description

Pulias before it founds its first city. Pulias has 3 settlers, 2 scouts, and 2 Land-Ironclads. Pulias just got 3 spies.
Same screen as before, but with the adviser window open. Here our adviser tells us how to use spies. And we see the icon of Pulias.
Same place as before, but more zoomed out.
Pulias found its first city, and we learn that Pulias' capital is called Pulias.
Let's see what we can build in Pulias. Looks like we can still buy stuff with faith even so religion is disabled in the Empires of the Smokey Skies.
The League of Empires, here we see our progress to victory, which is zero at the beginning of the game. So far no titles for Pulias.
What spies does Pulias have and where are they? So far Pulias has three, who haven't been moved to any cities.
Our Social Politics, as we can see there are only 5 domains.
    Meeting Luther Griggs of Vedria.
Pulias is growing and got already some buildings and is building a port. And the empire got already a second city.
The second city is called Warwick and it is building a garden.
Pulias has discovered a new technology: Economy Imperialism
In the meantime, Pulias has met 2 other fractions and 3 city-states. Pulias is now going after some Barbarians. Pulias has also founded a third city: Coventry
Pulias' Land-Ironclad moved closer to the Barbarians and is now in a zone of control.
More Barbarians in the North of Pulias get grilled.
Getting some advise from the advisers, and there is another fraction that Pulias has met.
Let's kill some Barbarians the city-states will be happy.
What to research next? The tech tree showing the steam era and the aviation era.
Another game Enuch is playing. Enuch has some nice airships.
Enuch does not so well in the League of Empires. Enuch does not hold any title.
The area of Dalmace, its capital is called Dalmace, and there are also two other cities, Marseille, and Chartres.
Another game of Eruch, its captital is called Eruch. Eruch seems to be fighting against another fraction it has there one city: Yakuts.
    Vedria is starting a game.
And here is last part of the tech tree with the future techs.

I miss actual scenarios. I really enjoyed them a lot. I especially miss After the Apocalypse and the WWIII scenario.

I also am very looking forward to this steampunk...mod...thing. Wish it could be played as either a scenario or mod.

Gods and Kings emphasizes quests to gain influence in city states Gods and Kings adds to Civilization 5 new types of city states, and rebalances the city states. City states cannot just be bribed with gold to gain influence there. To gain influence in city states, it is more important in Gods and Kings to complete quests for the city states. City states can offer in Gods and Kings up to three quests. The available quests and their type can be viewed in the diplomacy overview. The quests are divided into two types: Global quests and religion or civilization specific quests. Global quests can be completed by any player on the map. Global quests can directly turn a city state into an ally. Global quests examples are:...

Gods and Kings adds one new era to Civilization 5

Gods and Kings adds one new era to Civilization 5. The new era has so far no known name, but it is placed between World War I and World War II, and tentatively called the Great War era. Ed Beach: "...there is no so called Great War era, we only used this terminology to describe a class of units. We have, however, added a new era to the tech tree that should help us to extend the post-gunpowder world a little bit further."

With the new era we get new units, especially WWI, and the Infantry has been split into a WWI and WWII.

  • Gods and Kings tweaks diplomacy and adds espionage to Civilization 5
    by Martin Gühmann
The changes to diplomacy Gods and Kings adds to Civilization 5 diplomacy, embassies, religion, espionage, ideological blocks, and addresses some imbalances. Civ5:G&K addresses imbalances with the AI (artificial intelligence, computer player). The AI does not dislike you anymore if you are just "trying to win the game the same way as" the AI itself. The AI does not mind so much anymore if you settling closely when the empire borders are already clear and settling is just about closing gaps. Whether the AI considers you a warmonger depends now whether you have started the war or not, this seems to be related to conquering cities and city states. Additionally, the AI forgets things more easily so that wars do not tend to run forever. Other balancing changes concern the research agreement, it now requires Education instead of Philosophy and both civilizations must be now friends. Gods and Kings brings embassies to Civilization 5 diplomacy. Embassies are available from the Classical Age and reveal the capital of the other civilization. Embassies are required for agreements like Defensive Pact and Open Borders. Embassies also allow access to the intrigue menu that is part of espionage. Espionage is an important factor in the late game when religion ceases to be important. ...
