Civ V, Multiplayer - the future

Now Civ V is out for roughly 5 months and a lot of people have stated their opinion about the game. Some have expressed that they are content with the game, and that they have a lot of fun with it. Others - and seemingly the majority of players - have stated that the game is a failure in most aspects, and that they have put it aside after a few months or weeks even. I'm not going to give judgement on who is right on this matter, I'll just describe my own view on the game in general and most of all in regards to an aspect I have deeply loved with Civ IV - the Multiplayer side of the game.

Free DLC for D2D customers scheduled for December 2010

Snakpakk, Community Manager of Direct2Drive, posted in our forums in response to his questions about the 'free DLC' for D2D customers:

"Here is the deal on the Civ 5 DLC:
The Mongols Civilization and Scenario Pack- is a free gift from 2K for all the Civ fans out there. Due out October 25
The Babylonian Civ pak- gives none Deluxe version owners the ability to play as Babylonians (deluxe owners already have this) Due October 25th for $4.95

If you pre-ordered from D2D then your free DLC is due out in December. Sadly I don't have details on that yet but keep a eye on D2D's main page for the announcement. Hope this helps clear the air.

  • Genghis Khan released as FREE DLC on October 25th!

Genghis Khan released as FREE DLC on October 25th!

The first DLC for Civilization V will arrive on October 25th and distributed through Steam! A free new civilization and leader, Genghis Kahn of the Mongols, will be released together with a Scenario Pack for free! As a gift in answer to the "Civ Fanatics" who are "very well organized". Perhaps in response to the many troubles people had with Civ5 so far. That gift is highly appreciated!

According to a screenshot on joystick.com the Mongols ability is: "Mongol Terror", which means: "Combat strength +30% when fighting City-State units or attacking a City-State itself. All mounted units receive +1 movement points"
The Mongols have two unique units; the well known Keshik and the Khan.

Civilization V vs Civilization IV v Civilization III - A brief set of thoughts

Having played Civilization I, II, III, and IV constantly since they were first released, and through the various incarnations of Warlords, Beyond the Sword etc., but having never played Civilization Revolution, I was looking forward with a great deal of anticipation to the release of Civilization V. I cannot remember the last time a PC release found me waiting in the damp chill of autumn air outside my local game store before opening, but Civilization V managed it. I know I could have bought it on Steam, but old habits... Having played the new version for the past few days, I would make the following observations:

Civ5 patch ESTIMATED to arrive next week!

Greg "2K Greg" Laabs of 2K Games has updated his Patch-post at the 2k forums with an ETA and some new fixes/improvements:

Greg Laabs: Also, many people have been asking for an ETA on when this patch will be released. I said I'd do what I can to get some sort of ETA and now I have it for you. However! I am about to do something I don't normally like to do: Give an ETA. Big emphasis on the E. So what I am about to tell you is the current estimation of when it will be available. This patch is not done with testing at the current time, and most everyone in software development has experienced the dreaded last minute showstopper bug that forces a delay. This could happen! So, with all of that in mind:
The patch will be available as early as next week.

  • Apolyton Launches the "Apolyton Arena" for Civilization 5

Apolyton Launches the "Apolyton Arena" for Civilization 5

    Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm glad to be able to announce the launch of Apolyton's Multiplayer (MP) section including the Apolyton Arena. This part of the site is there to cover all things MP Gaming.

Whether you want to play a spontaneous game casually once a week or be part of a clan participating in tournaments and working your way up the rankings all day long, whether you want to solely play OneCityChallenge or Earth games, whether you're interested in long-term Diplogames, PBeM or Pitboss - this is the section for you.

The common ground of all those ways of playing the game in MP and at the same time main reason for this section is the fact that it's not possible to get a MP game in Civ by just hosting or joining a random game in the MP lobby, because the vast majority of people will quit once something doesn't go according to plan or they ran out of time.

    Apolyton Arena
The Arena is the core element of the MP section. It's there to help in settings up games, making sure those games are finished even if a quit occurs and in generally creating a MP environment that allows casual play just as competitive in tournaments for instance.

  • Gamefiles show: Religion was removed from Civilization V!

Gamefiles show: Religion was removed from Civilization V!

We got a tip and dived into it! Religion was once in Civilization V, but later removed by Firaxis. Many files of the game have links to religous elements of the game, including a religious victory, Shrines, State Religions and Missionaries. Firaxis never denied that they considered to bring religion back in Civilization 5, after it was a big success in Civilization IV!

Eight religions are named in the source files: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Polytheism, Shintoism, Spiritualism and Zoroastrianism. (Compared to the seven religions of Civ4). Apparently the developers had already proceeded beyond just 'copying and pasting' the religion-concept from Civ4, and even had decided upon the names of the to-be-included religions. Later it appeared that Religion was not compatible with the new diplomatic / attitude model that was being implemented in the game, Jon Shafer (Lead Designer of Civilization V) answered in various interviews. We were not aware yet that the decision was made when Religion was already in a more or less working state in the game at that moment.
