Apolyton Civilization Site proudly presents: The Archives
They were gone, we missed them, we already gave up hope, but we found them: The archives.
We just had to place them back, so enjoy.

Apolyton's old attachments are back
Since Apolyton's move to the new server and vBulletin 4, there is still some work that needs to be done. We still have the legacy avatars, the archives, and the download database. But today we can celebrate the return of the old attachments. ... -

New Message Icons for Apolyton
Initially, Apolyton had some ugly blue message icons. They were left on the old server. Then we had the ugly message icons from vBulletin. And now we have some new shiny message icons from our smilie database.

Seasons greetings / Happy 2011!
Dear Apolyton Member or Visitor,
...
Happy new year! Felices fiestas! Frohest fest! Gelukkig nieuwjaar! 春節, 春节v! Dobrze nowy rok!
At Apolyton, we hope that 2011 will bring you happiness, warmth, and prosperity. In addition to this, we wish you the very best for your civ gaming - from 4000 BCE towards victory.
While we are one of the oldest civilization sites, time has certainly not stood still at Apolyton. In the past year we've improved and upgraded the forum structure and technology which supports it at apolyton.net.
As a civilization fan you are no doubt aware that civilization has seen a fifth edition. Various improvements have been incorporated, and we are happy to hear from you about your experiences with this latest installment of the civ tradition. More generally, in the new year, we hope to continue seeing you on the forum for any and all civ-related discussion.

Apolyton e-mail works again!
Yesterday Arno returned from his holiday trip and immediately fixed our e-mail problems. Arno is one of the co-owners of Apolyton Civilization Site and acts as the Infrastructural Manager (jobtitle still under consideration ) of Apolyton.
This means that PM notifications, thread subscriptions, mail-confirmations, etc. should now arrive for everyone again, just as in the past. There are some minor problems left over but Arno is working on this to solve these as well. -

New member registrations at Apolyton now manually approved!
While the e-mail problems persist for Apolyton, new member registrations continue to flow in! Over 900 Civ fans from all over the world have signed up for an Apolyton membership in the past few days. Unfortunately only a very few of them were able to finish their registration by clicking the famous 'confirm' link in an e-mail. All because of the Poly Mail Problems. While we continue to look for a solution, we started to approve these registrations manually. This means that right now everybody who registered at Apolyton in the past week now has access! We will continue to manually approve once or twice a day till the problems are solved. So if you read this and did not got any e-mail message yet, just try to login! Welcome at Apolyton Civilization Site!

Registration Problems at Apolyton
Since the new Apolyton Site went online last week a large number of people have tried to register at Apolyton! About 6 times as many as before! We're happy with these new members a lot, there's one problem though. Our e-mail server is not able to send out confirmation e-mails to any but gmail (or gmail related) addresses. We are trying to figure out what's going wrong, but for now this means that the only way to register at Apolyton is to use a gmail address. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

User generated content on apolyton.net - why and how to
Yes, user generated content. Web 2.0. Blah blah. Yet another site which tries to cut down on the own work load by hiring the users to generate the site's content for free, you might think. But in reality, it's the other way round. Any site - and Apolyton of course is no difference here - is all about the users. As a coder you see users as something somehow ambigous - the paranoid in you always thinks of SQL injections and XSS attacks and of other malicious ways people try to to exploit your beautiful code, your creation. Somehow you tend to forget then that the users are the only reason why any site exists. Web design is no purpose beyond, no state of the art, no thing good in itself. As any art it needs the beholder. ...

Apolyton has upgraded to vBulltetin 4.2.0. We still have to fix some issues.
The menu of the downloads has to be rebuilt and some menu items are still missing. Also there are some problems with keeping the download tab selected.
The menu of the MP Arena has also be fixed so far it is displayed on top of the Apolyton forum menu, probably I have also rebuild it.
The List and the Apolyton University have been removed from the Apolyton navigation tab bar. We went out of space for them with the new What's New? tab. Since The List and the Apolyton University aren't that active anyway, and new What's New? tab seems to be more interesting I think this is the better choice.
For some reason on the forum home the side bar with all the news item is now under the forum list. It is possible that this is only true for certain browsers with certain settings.
Merging the existing styles with the vBulletin modifications did not cause any trouble this time. So now you can select a mobile style from the bottom style chooser. Maybe I will adjust the color choice of this, but probably it is fine as it is.
The forum has now a manager for the top navbar, so I we can reorganize the links and menus there....-

Apolyton is upgrading to vBulletin 4.2.0. vBulletin 4.2.0 comes with with a new way to customize the forum menu bar so that I can put there in a drop down menu links to the games we cover. vBulletin 4.2.0 comes also with a mobile style. Let's see how that turns out. To upgrade Apolyton from vBulletin 4.1.10 to vBulltein 4.2.0 we must close the forums for a short while. This is the plan...

Around January 28, 2012 01:00 GMT+1 Apolyton crashed down. The reason was that we ran out of space. Looks like you uploaded to many big attachments. Well, I freed some space. Well, it took me some time to figure this out. And probably it didn't help that I was a bit sick. We were shortly back on Monday, but had problems with posts displaying, we restored the site from a recent backup, so your noise from Monday is gone. But well, we still have the search index , which probably took the longest to fix...
