In his 2004 GDC presentation, Soren Johnson mentions The List for Civ3, noting that with its 200,000 words it's about 25,000 words longer than the New Testament. He's familiar with this list and therefore the wishes of the fan community. Also, during its development, Soren repeatedly posted in our Apolyton forum to indicate that he was keeping track of The List for Civ IV, and after its completion in January 2005 he said:
[W]ell, I`ve looked through much of the list and it`s nice to know that many of your suggestions are already in the game. I`ll keep my eye out for other ideas which will fit Civ4... |
During Civilization IV's development he also frequently visited Apolyton (and presumably other fansites as well), often enough to be aware of just about everything under discussion in the Civ4 forums. He occassionaly posted as well, but mostly to set straight some misunderstandings created by previews and the like.
But although Soren may be familiar with fan suggestions, that doesn't mean he will make use of them all. Every suggestion has to be carefully weighted and balanced against other ideas. Soren says:
[T]here are a thousand ways to make a great game of Civ, we only get to make one. The mistake is trying to hit everything. We have to pick what our style is. |
More importantly, an ever-increasing number of hand-picked hardcore Civilization fans played Civilization IV for the last 18 months of it's development and provided feedback to Soren and the rest of the Firaxis team in a private forum. This group started out with about 20 members and ended up with around 200 by the time the game was released. Several members of this group were (eventually) 'promoted' to advisors or even Firaxis employee's. These, and the members of the testting group who made the largest contribution where credited in the game credits:
