Judo is a SPORT, not a combat system. As such, no, being a Judo black belt in many cases would not help. Judo is less of a joke than, say, various Karate and Kung-Fu styles, to say nothing of Tae Kwon Do, but any of those styles, judo included, are really only effective in the dojo against other practitioners, who are willing to follow the rules (for example, when I used a BJJ technique against a Judo practitioner, he cried about it being unfair), or against people either so inexperienced or so physically weak that it wouldn't matter anyway.Really? You don't think that being a Judo black belt would help you there? You want contact.
Tell ya what. Take the head guy in your local Judo studio, and put him in a street fight with a 6'2", 215 lb ex con. I know where my money is probably going to be, and it isn't on the Judo black belt.
That attitude of yours, though, is the problem with martial artists - a lot of them think that their training makes them, if not invincible, then pretty tough guys. The reverse, though, is usually true. If you think about it, you are training in a controlled environment with simulated opponents and rules about what you and they can and cannot do. It would be like training a soldier in firearms by taking him paintballing, except more extreme than that.
Back to the topic at hand, my sister is a cop, and she seems to be fine. One of my best friends is a Dallas cop, and he has no particular problem with female officers, either.

It's both, really.Judo is a SPORT, not a combat system.
Most MMA folks have some Judo experience. That tells me that it is useful in combat and more effective when combined with other techniques.Judo included, are really only effective in the dojo against other practitioners, who are willing to follow the rules (for example, when I used a BJJ technique against a Judo practitioner, he cried about it being unfair), or against people either so inexperienced or so physically weak that it wouldn't matter anyway.
No weapons? I'd give that to my old sensei who was a 6'5 250 pound Russian.Tell ya what. Take the head guy in your local Judo studio, and put him in a street fight with a 6'2", 215 lb ex con. I know where my money is probably going to be, and it isn't on the Judo black belt.
1, I don't think I'm invincible. That attitude of yours, though, is the problem with martial artists - a lot of them think that their training makes them, if not invincible, then pretty tough guys.
2. I don't particularly feel the need to be a 'tough' guy.
The reasons for doing so are many. One, the padding in the dojo is a safety feature. If you were to take Judo out on concrete, I can't imagine someone getting up after a hip throw. Two, the 'rules' are pretty much all designed to ensure that the participants avoid injury, no different from shooting regulations at a range. The reverse, though, is usually true. If you think about it, you are training in a controlled environment with simulated opponents and rules about what you and they can and cannot do. It would be like training a soldier in firearms by taking him paintballing, except more extreme than that.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

BK,
No it isn't. If it was a combat system, you wouldn't be restricted as to the types of attacks you can mount. For example, if someone was lying flat on their face, you'd be allowed to stomp on their head. If certain techniques are prohibited, it ain't a combat system, it's a combat sport. It's both, really.
I'm not sure that most MMA folks have Judo experience. However, I see your point, because most MMA folks do have traditional martial arts experience of some kind. That doesn't mean Tae Kwon Do is particularly effective, though. Most MMA folks have some Judo experience. That tells me that it is useful in combat and more effective when combined with other techniques.
Congrats, you just made my point for me by bringing size into it. What if your old sensei was a 5'7", 140 lb Japanese guy?No weapons? I'd give that to my old sensei who was a 6'5 250 pound Russian.
No, but you seem to think that Judo is effective for a street fight. That's unfortunately incorrect, unless the guy you are fighting cooperates.1, I don't think I'm invincible.
2. I don't particularly feel the need to be a 'tough' guy.
That's OK; I can't imagine a Judo practitioner being able to fully execute a hip throw without getting punched, eye gouged, or otherwise ****ed up.The reasons for doing so are many. One, the padding in the dojo is a safety feature. If you were to take Judo out on concrete, I can't imagine someone getting up after a hip throw.
Exactly, and no one would seriously argue that shooting at a range prepares you for a combat environment. Two, the 'rules' are pretty much all designed to ensure that the participants avoid injury, no different from shooting regulations at a range.Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/DaveDaDouche
