  • No question that the candidates are the worst that there has ever been. How did we get here from 2012 and 2008 when the candidates were good and decent (the only exception was the candidate for VP from the Republicans in 2008).

(And I say that as someone who then and, also now, would not vote for Romney over Obama.)
(But I would definitely consider Romney over Hillary. Sorta depends on what Romney it seemed that we would get.)
(It does seem, however, like the Republican candidate reflects the Republican message of the last 8 years. He really is their fault. Hillary is the fault of the Democrat establishment; if she had not run some other, probably better, Democrat would have.)

    • If Trump wins I will primarily blame Trump voters.

But I will also blame Hillary.

      • Well Trump has failed to make any progress at best. I think if there's a big terrorist attack or something he wins otherwise he loses. Clinton's health episode won't be enough to carry him to victory but it did push out his shenanigans (like the Khannnns!!!!!) out of the news cycle.

If I'm right (see my earlier posts) the GOP will have one last chance to do something to change things in 2020. After that they will be stuck "having fun" as the minority party until the liberal+minority alliance falls apart.

          • I see a fairly narrow Hillary victory after which she laoses in 2020 if the Republicans prove to be even remotely compitent during that go around.

That is the most probable result.

Followed by a '24 and '28 Democratic win if the Republican is a Cruz/Trump/Walker/etc look alike.

                • I don't recall the pundit who said it, but I agree, the debate was Bart vs. Lisa. Bart will win by being an almost polite assh0le. He can lie. He can be proudly anti-government, he can tacitly acknowledge being racist and still win.
I only watched excerpts from the debate; the entire bun fight would have been too depressing. It seems like underwritten satire. Maybe one of them could hire Trey Parker to kick things up a notch...

                  • With her VP pick and the (frankly surprising) strong endorsement from ex-GOP Sen. John Warner, Hillary looks pretty solid in Virginia.

Historically, both Romney and McCain were really weak GOP nominees. Strong nominees don't lose 10 states. Strong nominees get 50 percent+ in the convention, the last to do that on the Republican side was Dubya.

Obama was not a particularly strong nominee either. Dubya is the strongest nominee on either side since Reagan. Democrats haven't had a strong candidate since FDR.

                      • A lopsided primary victory only means the candidate is stronger than the opposition. This can mean a very strong candidate or crappy opposition. The other side is also true, a close primary victory can mean that the candidate are overall weak, or overall strong.

                            • Everyone keeps saying that, but seriously, she just ain't breaking that far ahead in the polls. They looked like they were bouncing apart again, but they've narrowed slightly. I really don't know what he could do to make his numbers drop significantly at this point. He could tweet his favorite ethnic slurs, with multi-tweet extended commentary, for a full week, and then re-tweet that as "The Best of The Donald," and it might temporarily drop his numbers by like five points. He'd bounce right back somehow. It's really remarkable.
