Getting my post of the month in early - That was June and July's, this is August, see y'all in September.

About what it feels like, anyway. Now I gotta get my slackin' ass back to work.

See y'all around, by and by.

This reminds me of a song...
NB: This song was written in 1959 and is now less accurate

I wanna go back to Dixie, take me back to dear ol' Dixie!
That's the only li'l ol' place for li'l ol' me!
Old times they are not forgotten,
          Whapping slaves and sellin' cotton,
And waiting for the Robert E. Lee (it was never there on time...)
I'll go back to the Swanee,
          Where pellagra makes you scrawny,
And the honeysuckle clutters up the vine,
          I really am a-fixin',
To go home and start a-mixin'
          Down below that Mason-Dixon line!
Oh, poll tax, how I love ya,
How I love ya, my dear ol' poll tax!
Oh wontcha come with me back to Alabammy
Back to the arms of my dear ol' mammy,
Her cookin's lousy and her hands are clammy,
But what the hell, it's home!

Yes, for paradise the South-land is my nominee...
Just give me a ham hock and a grit of hominy...

Oh, I wanna go back to Dixie, I wanna be a Dixie pixie,
And eat corn pone 'til it's comin' outta my ears,
I wanna talk with Southern gentlemen,
And put that white sheet on again,
I ain't seen one good lynchin' in years!

The land of the boll weevil,
          Where the laws are medieval,
Is callin' me to come and never more roam,
I wanna go back to the South-land,
          That "y'all" and "shut-ma-mouth"-land,
          Be it ever so decadent,
          There's no place like home!
          I refute it thus!
"Destiny! Destiny! No escaping that for me!"

When can I call myself a Southerner?

You can call yourself a southerner when you embrace rebellion in your heart and deny regimentation.

I've always been a southerner. In other places its called being a $hit disturber

And you can't change the experiences my g/f has had dealing with Southern womyn (and I don't think any of them were from Atlanta). I'm sorry but using 'Southern graciousness' to get a job doesn't speak volumes of your society.
I'm sorry for the experiences that your girlfriend had Imran, but I think it may be little rash to paint the entire south by her experiences or anyone from the south doing the same with the north. Despite what others may say, not all people in a given region are the same.

As for che, there are many subtle things about being in the south. Grits must be a southeast thing cause I can't stand them. If you can halfway relate to this song you are on your way to becomming a southerner.

                    I'm Gonna Miss Her
                    (Brad Paisley/Frank Rogers)

                    Well I love her
                    But I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin' hole today
She'd be packin' all her things
And she'd be gone by noon

                    Well I'm gonna miss her
                    When I get home
But right now I'm on this lakeshore
And I'm sittin' in the sun
                    I'm sure it'll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
                    That I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite

Now there's a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
                    But that water's right
                    And the weather's perfect
No tellin' what I might catch today

                    Well I'm gonna miss her
                    When I get home
But right now I'm on this lakeshore

Apparently che has had somewhat the same idea.

i don't know what kind of south some of you guys are talking about.....
i was born and raised in the south....
grits is not on my list of fave food...
if you like gravy and biscuits , chicken fried steak
and barbeque then you are on the right track...

southern men treat their ladies real fine, if they didn't their
momas would be all up in their face.
southern men are gentlemen to the core...
open doors and say yes mam.
they take off their hats in church and stand when the flag is raised. you won't find a better man than a southern man anywhere.

and its for sure some of you don't really know
southern women... cause they are some strong willed women,
with tough backbones and you won't get much over on any one of us for very long.

I work for an executive recruiter, and can tell "y'all" from first-hand experience that Imran is pretty on-the-mark. We have a great deal of Southern clients, some pretty huge ones, and I can't think of one of them that hasn't hired a white male. Several women came back from interviews and complained they felt condescended to while there. One of the biggest of them (a really big one, everyone knows), rejected a candidate due to his sexual orientation (after which I demanded to be taken off the search).

Now, to be fair, there are a lot of big Midwest companies, particularly rust belt ones, who are pretty much the same. We actually sent a white lesbian into a major industrial manufacturer, and she literally *****ed out the HR person to their face about how there were only white men in the management. Oy vey I remember that day...

The East and West coast companies we work for, however, tend to aggressively go after women and minorities (Though a couple of the big banks we do business for did recently hire white guys, so it's not like there's "reverse discrimination").
