Well in the US when it was legal to do that people used to end up with worthless paper.
    Not so different from today.

You are confusing marriage with booze.

Since when are people only allowed to marry for procreation?

Elderly people are still allowed to marry one another even though they are pass the point of reproduction.

Convicts in prision were given the right to marry in the 1980s in United States (cannot remember the specific year off-hand).

Infertile women or men of any age are allowed to marry even though they cannot procreate.

To be so narrow-minded as to legitimize marriage only for the sake of procreation is to deny other reasons for getting married - economic arrangements, and this thing that Drake might not know about - it's called love.

The state does not have any right to dictate to people the reasons for marriage. Each individual has that right to choose whether or not they want to procreate as part of their marriage, not the state.

The real question is why do "religious" groups like the Mormons still have tax exempt status? It's very clear they're directly messing in politics and so shouldn't continue to receive the tax benefits of a religious organization. Slap them with the same tax bills corporations must pay until they learn their lesson to follow the law and stay out of politics.

I agree Oerdin - all churches need to have their tax exempt status revoked.

It already is the law but no one enforces it.

You should become a law enforcer that enforces it.

This seems like a good place to ask this but why have gay activists singled out the Mormon church for protests and not black churches who pushed the marriage ban for gays over the top?

While I agree with the sentiment (bans against gay marriage violate the equal protection clause of the US Constitution and violate the right to marriage as asserted in Loving v. Virginia), I don't see the reason for nation wide protests against Prop 8. After all, that's a California law and if the reason is solidarity with the California gays, well, the gay marriage bans in Florida and adoption ban in Arkansas were FAR, FAR more reprehensible. At least in California gays have civil union rights.

Probably because CA matters more. Not like gays are going to look to Arkansas to lead the way

Massachusetts has already led the way .
