It's not as big a deal as you think it is, asleep. The incumbent Palin unseated was one of the most unpopular governors in history and had a laundry sheet of misdeeds as long as the Dead Sea Scrolls (including - and here comes the irony - appointing his daughter to the U.S. Senate seat he vacated after winning the governorship). Someone was going to unseat him; it was merely a matter of who.

While I really could care less who McCain would pick for his VP since I have 0% intention of voting for him, the timing of the announcement was good, as it refocused the political mediasphere around him and prevented today from being all about Obama's speech yesterday.

Palin is not a terrible choice. Her biggest problem is that current investigation ongoing. Otherwise, there is a variety of reasons why she makes more sense than your normal white-bread white male republican governors.
