  • That's why I'm asking.

I know Zkribbler has prejudice against rural folks, as evidenced by his comment that Alaska is small and rural.

I'm curious as to why he feels Palin wouldn't be prepared to take a 3am phone call, when she's had plenty of that already.

    • I think it's telling that McCain based his Veep pick on winning a news cycle instead of building a team to govern.

      Sour grapes, Ramo?

Didn't you say McCain had to have a splash? He did. You should be careful what you ask for.

      • He was in the Illinois senate from 1997 onwards. That's 7 years experience.

Want to try some more lies again?
2 years as governor > 2 years as a senator.

Speaking of lies (not to mention arithmetic)...

          8 years of state experience (State Senate: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004)

          +

          4 years of federal experience (U.S. Senate: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)

= 12 years of state & federal experience

          Check your math again.

He's certainly more qualified for either position than Palin is. Two years isn't enough to deal with the full breath of issues, and it doesn't include those issues that you can only get working at the national legislative level.

Bush himself is proof enough that a few years as a governor alone does not qualify you for the presidency (or VP).

You'd prefer Palin debate Obama. It'd be less of a challenge for her.

Biden's going to destroy her in their debate.

            • What i've seen is that an aide made a call, and possibly a few calls, but she's been very direct about the matter and said/did all the right things... it may be a bit of a scandal, but Obama has worse (Rezko, and people are forgetting Giannoulias (One of Obama's friends, also in the Rezko mess, and reputedly a mob tie). At least Palin has made some pretty substantial efforts to fight corruption...

McCain is 72. There is a decent chance that, if elected, he won't serve out his entire term, especially if elected to 2 terms, which would make him 80 at the end of his 2nd term. Therefore, this VP selection is very important.

I know nothing about this woman, I'm sure that won't last too long though. As of now, again without knowing anything about Palin, I would have to say I would feel more comfortable with Biden as VP than her.

I think Obama selected someone who he actually thinks can help him govern. Again this is speculation, but I just can't picture McCain selecting her because he wants her insight on foriegn affairs or the economy. I think he is hoping for as many Hillary Clinton voters as he can siphon off.

That is what make this situation sad. Because if she is only on the ticket to smile and get women voters it could be pretty dangerous for America since there is a decent chance she could eventually end up president.

                • There's some question of whether Palin could be a clever choice against Biden, because of his aggressive style that might come across negatively when against a woman (and a non-Hillary woman, at that).

                  • All this talk about a heartbeat away from the presidency is probably over-blown. McCain's mother is still alive at 96. I suspect McCain still has at least a decade left in him.

                    • I'm not talking about the image thing or who will win a debate, I am talking about the decent possibility that McCain's VP choice could end up President. It's one of the few times where I really will consider VP choice of a candidate when voting,

                      • I don't think that many people vote for the Presidential ticket based on #2. I mean, really, was it Cheney that energized Republicans in 2000 or gave Bush his slim popular vote loss? Or was it Lieberman who gave Gore his slim electoral vote loss?

As for Palin, having read her Wikipedia bio (for whatever that is worth), the reasons I could come up with why McCain chose her are:

                        1. She is young and a woman, both of which feed into the "change" meme in this election.

                        2. She has made "clean government" her big message, which backs McCain's idea of himself and his candidacy. Also not the most popular person with the old Republican machine in Alaska, which again supposedly enhances McCain's "maverick" image.

                        3. Overall social conservative (please base) but not a demagoge on the issues (doesn't scare away independents).

And conversely, she could either come up looking meek (voters probably don't want that) or as aggressive (voters don't want that either). Women candidates for high office get screwed both ways.

                            A) Women live longer than men in general.

                            B) McCAin's mother never had the pressure of being president of the United States. They say every year as president is like 4 normal years (almost like dog years )

Maybe she'll be absolved, but I don't know how much I believe "blame it on the aides" before the investigation runs its course.

And there's no there, there with Rezko. Obama personally bought land at a higher price than it was worth. Usually "scandals" involve lower prices...

As for Giannoulias, dunno the specifics, but everyone in serious politics is acquainted with greasy people (look at McCain's recently aborted fundraiser with Ralph Reed). Dunno why we should be playing 5 degrees to Kevin Bacon. It's not really a scandal unless it involves a principal.
