  • re: creationism

But she later clarified saying creation shouldn't be part of the curriculum
Source? As late as two years ago, she said it should be taught in public schools.

In an interview Thursday, Palin said she meant only to say that discussion of alternative views should be allowed to arise in Alaska classrooms:

“I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum.”

She added that, if elected, she would not push the state Board of Education to add such creation-based alternatives to the state’s required curriculum.

Members of the state school board, which sets minimum requirements, are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.

“I won’t have religion as a litmus test, or anybody’s personal opinion on evolution or creationism,” Palin said.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

          • Sounds good. Use it as a five minute teaching moment on scientific method, then move on.

Somehow that's not what I think she intended. "It doesn't have to be part of the curriculum" isn't the same as "It shouldn't be part of the curriculum".

            • When she says "teach both," it's not particularly open to clarification. Sounds like she backtracked her way from crazyville after her aides figured that might've been a liability.

Next, Carey asked about teaching alternatives to evolution - such as creationism and intelligent design - in public schools.
              [...]

PALIN: “Teach both. You know, don’t be afraid of information.
“Healthy debate is so important and it’s so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.
"And, you know, I say this, too, as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject -- creationism and evolution.
“It’s been a healthy foundation for me. But don’t be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides.”

                • speaking of a creationism, let's remember one of the most amazing moments in this presidential race

3/10 republican candidates not "believing" (wrong term but anyway) in evolution...

mccain did hesitate for a bit though

As you mentioned it's a stupid question to begin with. One can easily believe in both evolution and creationism at the same time, depending on whether the word "evolution" is meant as an actual origin or merely as a method/tool/instrument/whathaveyou. Obviously if McCain is a Christian and also believes in evolution, then he must believe in a theistically "guided" evolution, which is the case for a vast majority of Christians and doesn't even contradict a slightly metaphorical reading of Genesis.

The number of Christian conservatives that actually still believe the world as it is literally popped up in 7 days are pretty minimal and definitely dwindling (probably even less than the 30% represented on that stage).
