McCain's tying himself to the Bush economic and Iraq policies reminds me of Ahab attaching himself to the great white whale as it submerged for the last time.

On The Diane Rehm Show this morning, a number of Democrats were calling in hoping the contest would go on, because it's allowing the later states to have a say in the nomination.

Also, Clinton has put at least $5 million of her own money into her campaign to keep it going and she's laying off staff, no more tv spots. She is done, but she may continue for a bit just to save face.

I predict she loans herself more money and goes on at least until West Virginia where she has a big lead due to the state being entirely blue collar. She'll only get 2 or 3 delegates out of it though and it won't revive her fund raising so she's dead. The super delegates know this and the 240 remaining fence sitters will now jump on the Obama bandwagon leaving her with no choice but to drop out. I predict 2-3 weeks before she finally bows to reality.

The only way I see her staying in is by spending money on nothing but travel (no media ads, no staff) and just spending her own money in order to do a death march to the convention. Either she's aiming for the VP spot (which Obama won't give her because they dislike each other) or she's hoping to damage Obama enough that he loses and she can make another run in 2012.

The only way I see Obama letting her be VP is if she makes it to the convention and they have to do a brokered convention.

          Yea, no doubt.

Then again, VPs are good to have as hatchet (wo)men, and Clinton would do pretty damn well in that role.

So what are other people's take on my post about Republicans who will vote for Obama rather than McCain?
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

As much as I dislike Hillary I have to admit this is true. Obama likes to say he is above the fray and won't respond to dumb spin but I think that hurts him a lot at the margins. Since this will be a close race (at most the spread will be 5%) he needs an attack dog and Hillary does make a nice attack dog.

A lot depends on who McCain picks as VP. If he goes with a religious loon in an attempt to appease the Bush 30% (the Republican's die hard base) then he'll lose the centrists because they'll either decide to not vote or they'll vote for the other side. If he gets creative and gets someone like Lieberman then he just might pull it off. Such a move would bite into the centrists and maybe he could split them with Obama while the Religious Right will never vote for a Democrat so he'll pick them up no matter what.

They aren't going to jump. The Obama campaign does not want to rub Clinton's nose in it. They're asking the super delegates to wait until Clinton makes the decision to drop out.

As for bowing to reality, last night's speech was just that. It was a concession speech without being overt. At this point, they're looking for a way for Clinton to drop out gracefully.

The math had been insurmountable for her since 3/4, but it took last night to force the press to finally stop taking her seriously. So far, that was the only thing buoying her. We're probably going to see Clinton doing the post-2/5 Huckabee thing. Run a positive, conciliatory, underfunded, mostly ignored campaign while racking up significant moral victories in KY and WV (Appalachia is easily Obama's most difficult region). And hope Obama chokes an underage male prostitute. For all intents and purposes, the general election has just started.

He won't pick a religious loon... he knows that's a death sentence. And while the religious right does not care for him, and stay away from the polls more than usual, the ones that do go will still vote for him, because they won't like the alternative

If he is really creative, he will pick a woman for VP. Maybe he can steal even more of the Hillary vote

McCain's smart bets would be either Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of TX or Gov. Bobby Jindal of LA.

Although I'd like to see Hillary as No. 2, Obama would have a problem picking Hillary as his running mate. He's built his campaign on "change," and she's "Old Washington," i.e. the anti-thesis of change. They don't go well together.

This directly contradicts what a Republican has told me recently; that she and her Republican friends say they will vote for Obama rather than vote for McCain.
