Dissident, I find your post more than puzzling. I have been a Republican all my life, even when it appeared the party had no hope after the Kennedy assassination when the Dems hammered Goldwater and had 2/3 majorities in Congress. Conservatism then was a dirty word.

The entire polictical landscape changed after Carter was elected and he brought on national humiliation and a ruinous economy. The country reacted strongly and elected Reagan. The rest is somewhat history. Over time, the Democrat party has been losing all conservatives, so much so, that the party is downright radical at this point. The party has become the party of religion haters.

As I said in an earlier post, Catholics noticed. When I was a kid, only a handful of my Catholic grade school did not support Kennedy. Every Catholic was a Democrat. Today, the Catholic vote goes Republican. The anti-Catholic hatred poring out of Democrat Party is noticed.

If Democrats ever truly want to be a national party again, it has to move back to the center and put muzzle the religion haters in their party. Whether it was mock or true, at least Clinton himself appeared to be a man of faith. Altar boy Kerry could not fool anyone when he consistently voted for killing born babies in Congress. It was not a mistake that the Catholic Church all but said that voting for Kerry was a sin.

I also understand that Bush is the first president re-elected with his party solidly controlling both houses of Congress since 1900. (I wonder about FDR's re-elections. But in those days, the Southern Democrats were a party of their own.)
