That may have been because the repubs campaigned harder in Florida, but so too did the dems. I think that this Florida vote (especially in the panhandle where the polls close later) was a backlash against the media actions in 2000.

I just said that I was wrong regarding party ID. Dunno what your point was.

          • Chris Matthews said this morning that the Dems strategy may be wrong. He said that they now concede the South and the West (not the Left Coast) for starters, and compete in the North, Midwest and the Left Coast. This strategy has produced two consecutive electoral college defeats.

            • You'd figure a reference to the Whigs would be enough to mark a post as facetious...

I still got two serious responses to it .

I never said that Kerry ran a good campaign, in fact I've been saying that it was pretty damn incompetent up till mid-September or so. I was simply stating the reasons for the dissonance between common wisdom of the pollsters and the results.

And which way do you predict it to go? A shift to the left or back to the right? Personally, I think if the dems are smart they'll forget about Hilary in 08 and look for a centrist who will have a chance to take a few southern states. It'll be too soon for Obama, otherwise I'd say he's a shoe-in for the nomination.

What common wisdom? I stopped paying serious attention to the polls weeks ago exactly because there was no common wisdom...

                            • Interestingly, with 4% of the votes still left to be cast, Bush Jr. smashes the total vote record held by none other than the Reagan in 84. Gore did not have the plurality record, and neither did Kerry in this election, manage to match Reagan.

                              57 million for Bush Jr.
                              51 million for Gore
                              47 million for Clinton
                              44 million for Clinton
                              48 million for Bush Sr.
                              54 million for Reagan

In a way. It seems that the Dem party is too far out in front of the bulk of the nation on social values.
