  • Common wisdom was completely wrong about this election. The main reason why is that the party distribution was about even, rather than the Dems having their traditional 4 poing lead. The question is, does this represent a fundamental shift in the electorate since 9/11, or a temporary aberration? I wrote 2002 off, but I have to wonder how many more cycles this pattern will last.

Well, I'm ****ing depressed. Southern Comfort ain't much comfort.

    • Wouldn't it be awesome if the Dems disintegrated after this debacle? Maybe we can bring back the Whigs!

If the Republicans didn't disintegrate after Goldwater's debacle, the Dems won't disintegrate after this much much closer election.

True and the Democrats survived the Civil War so they have certainly been through worse.

          • There's gonna be some vicious infighting in the Democratic Party, though. No question about it. And it's needed, IMO.

But at least the Republicans can claim that Johnson won an effective campaign... Dems can't say that about Bush.

You'd figure a reference to the Whigs would be enough to mark a post as facetious...

                  • Probably the incumbent rule too, but to a lesser extent. I think the main problem was overestimating Dem Party ID.

                    • Wait, wasn't the underestimation of Democratic voters the problem with the Gallup poll and others?
