I looked at some of the screenshots and while NWN1's graphics weren't even top at the time of it's release either, I too really didn't care for many of the designs I saw.

Still if the gameplay and toolset are good and the community is as strong as the first, I may get it. I'd like to finish my campaign someday.

"The game" doesn't need to be redesigned, at least not the whole. It consists of three parts, which need to be discussed separately.

      1) the engine with the DnD 3.5 ruleset - which is good as it is, as far as I can tell at this time

      2) the modules with the original campaign. Yes it seems to be pretty much linear, even a bit more so than the NWN1 OC. But frankly, who gives a damn about the OC? Pro players will use it as tutorial for modules and PWs. All others will like it, streamlined as it is. So it is not likely that it will be redesigned and, frankly, which doesn't matter much and is certainly not a reason not to buy the game.

Finally, 3), the game interface and the performance. A LOT of work to be done here. But I think it can be done, even though it will take time. It's been done in other games too. They won't change the graphics except perhaps a few buggy textures, but they can make run it smoother. Graphics are nice, but in the end of the day don't matter too much in an animated tabletop game.

      4) - yes I know I said three parts - the customer service. So far it stinks. Patches that don't work, dead links to the Atari technical CS (which doesn't even LIST NWN2 yet) and promises of a rebuild program to repair the botched patches - I expect a lot more.

By the way, are there alternatives to play with the 3.5 ruleset? Enlighten me!

Been reading a lot on the bioware forums this weekend and would tend towards Ralph's view. The linearity doesn't bother me really, and the UI and performance issues may well get improved in a patch. I'll play it through in a month or so if it has.

Still it would seem my scepticism above was vindicated - it really it a shame Obsidian haven't achieved more with such a great and unique franchise.

I may be biased because I really like the DnD 3.5 ruleset (from what I can see at level 6) and want to play with it. For this, I am ready to suffer inconveniences up to a certain point. If it were a 3.0 game, I would have put it on the shelf the very first day and returned to NWN1.

There is no good reason why the game should play so much worse than KOTOR. The voice acting stinks. The plot is utterly linear. A total waste of 25 pounds, and its not going to take me away from Guildwars: Nightfall, which is a joy to play and looks amazing.

                        DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

I just bought it and I had a hell of a time just to get it installed. I tried for over 8 hours to get the piece of **** to install and it turns out they have a copy protection software which won't let the disk run if you even have a DVD-R on your computer.

The only way to get it to run is to uninstall the software which allows your DVD-R to record. Let's ignore the fact that EVERY MOTHER ****ING COMPUTER WHICH HAS SHIPPED IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS HAS A DVD-R and instead concentrate on the fact that no game company should ever be allowed to preemptively disable a part of your computer (in this case the DVD-R drive). I am returning this game and I refuse to buy anything more from Atari as long as they continue to use such tactics.

I shouldn't mention the existence of a very useful nocd patch. Its totally nonlegal I suppose.

                              Ouch. That's a deal-breaker if true.
I've been wandering around a few other forums though and haven't seen any other such complaints.
I wasn't looking for this specifically but I'd imagine something like this should be far more obvious if it is widespread?
You sure it's not just an issue with only a select few DVD-writers/drivers?
Not that that'd help you any though I guess ...

I have both a DVD drive and a DVD recorder in my computer. Although I have problems with general stability, I don't face the described problem. So I wouldn't call that "tactics". Its likely just one in an endless list of bugs.
