  • Umm... one, he wasn't a 4x Pro Bowler til AFTER the CFL... two, he wasn't a backup for long, he quickly took the starting job from Flutie as soon as the Stampeders realized what they had on the bench compared to Flutie... three, in his second career start in the CFL, he passed for 546 yards and 6 TD's, shattering team records and clearly outshining Flutie
Not bad, except that Flutie's personal record was 582 yards.

As I said Garcia was good but Flutie was better.

    • You claimed that Flutie was the 3rd greatest QB of his generation, ahead of guys like Jim Kelly and John Elway.

Explain. What makes Flutie so good, especially compared to Kelly and Elway?
He had the complete package. He could throw for accuracy, yardage, touchdowns. He played a long time, so he had the durability. He had the leadership ability, in that every team he was either won championships, or contended. He could run the ball and scramble. He could scramble for TDs, and did so rather routinely. Think of Peyton Manning with Randall Cunningham's running ability. He was prenatural at avoiding sacks.

He was the greatest comeback king in the CFL. It didn't matter if you were leading, so long as he had the ball, he would eventually win. I've yet to see anybody do a 2 minute drill better than he did.

I got to see him when he first started out with the Lions. I wondered how the heck he escaped the US when we went to the Grey Cup and lost in his second year, after he set records for yardage and touchdowns.

After that it became a question of not whether, but when he would return to the NFL.

I find it hard to understand that the Lions would finally get him over the hump, and why the NFL teams never developed him properly. It was the Stampeders who were well known for developing some very good Quarterbacks, not the Lions. It's not a coincidence that they had both Flutie and Garcia.

            • Ben, your contention that NFL teams never "developed" Flutie is ridiculous. QBs are developed in their first few years. By the time Flutie came back to the NFL, he was a seasoned, experienced veteran of the CFL. But his inconsistency, lack of accuracy and inability to grow taller than 5'9" doomed him to the mediocre career he had in the US. Sure, he was a fan favorite and a star in the small pond of the CFL, but (unlike Garcia and Warner), did not have the physical tools to compete successfully in the NFL. At his best, Flutie was a shorter, slower version of Michael Vick.

                  • I see Ben took my dishonesty question as a challenge after all. Sheesh, the CFL is a talent-poor minor league with screwy rules. Success there does not show the ability to succeed in the NFL.

                      • Umm, MRT, I'm a convert. I liked Flutie long, long before I was ever a Catholic.

As for whether he could compete in the NFL, two back to back trips to the playoffs with the Bills suggests that he was indeed capable of competing. Fact of the matter, yes, those three teams failed to develop one of the most talented QBs. That's a huge egg on their faces.

                          • I think it has a lot more to do with Flutie's height than his faith. The whole "little engine who could" thing. My guess is, Ben's about the same height.

Good thing I posted the "How tall are you?" thread a few weeks ago. Just checked it. I didn't account for Ben's midget stature so he selected "Less than 5'6"" in the poll. So he'd actually be looking up to Flutie even still

I do think it messed up that a guy like Troy Smith who's 6 foot was seen as a late round pick just because of his height while the 6'5 Russell was a #1 pick. You see it every year where guys who are 6', 6'1", and 6'2" are deemed too short to play QB.

EDIT: Ben posted in that thread. He's 5'5"

                              • Enough about Ben and his hard on for Doug.

                                I got a FF question.

                                Yards allowed is primary concern.

The Jets are home against Baltimore on Monday night.. Revis is back. It's the regular season home opener for the new stadium. However, Baltimore has one of the best RBs in the game. Ray Rice can be a monster.

The Steelers are home against Atlanta. I'm not a big RB M.Turner fan, so to me, Atlanta doesn't have a superstar, but they do have a pretty good overall offense.

I'm leaning toward NYJ, but I am looking for some input.
