  • I don't see how you get that two of them MUST clinch-- Imagine Vancouver goes 5-0 in those games and Calgary and Minny split their encounters-- A variety of splits could result in two of them climching spots but I don`t see how it is a `must``
    True a bit hasty.

I have to add a win against Colorado somewhere because if Colorado wins 5-2, they eliminate Edmonton.

          • Edmonton has three scenarios by which they can still win the division!

If Edmonton wins all their remaining games AND

Colorado goes EXACTLY 4-3, losing both Edmonton games and one other.

            AND

If Minnesota wins EXACTLY 2 games against Vancouver/Calgary

            AND

If Vancouver wins EXACTLY two against Minnesota/Calgary and defeats Colorado,

OR if Calgary wins two against Minnesota/Calgary and defeats colorado,

OR if Minnesota wins EXACTLY once, defeats colorado and Vancouver/Calgary both win 3 games.

                • NL wild card 1998 would be a great example (3 teams FINISHED tied for the wild card and one division lead, the Cubs only because of a botched double play that began with 2 outs by Craig Biggio that failed to end an Astros victory that turned into a Cubs victory) ... I don't remember how many teams were in it at the end, but it was a surprisingly large number.

NHL's weird schedule with all the west teams playing each other at the end definitely made this more interesting, though...

                  • wow Ben-- Thats a lot of lines to say that teams 6 and 7 points up on chasing teams will clinch a playoff spot if they win 3 or 4 of their remaining games

PLus of course, all those possibilities for Edmonton (except the division fantasy) still also exist for Chicago and Columbus (2 points back of the Oil with a game in Hand)

For instance, in practice there is NO WAY the Oil make the playoffs going 3-4. It would pretty much require Nashville, Columbus AND Chicago to ALL go 2-2 in their series against each other and then have NONE of them secure as many as two wins in their other games when they are playing a resting Detroit team and St Louis.

I think it is barely mathematically possible if all of the results go perfectly. IN reality one of the teams sweeps St Louis or there are a couple of 3 point games.

Bottom line-- If you rae looking at Edmonton you need to look at teams 2 points back of them holding a game in hand

Oh ya and Phoenix too--All their games are against solid in the playoffs teams or totally out teams so there is none of the NW division complications but your 3-4 in for Edmonton also requires tyhem to be less than 4-3

So its an interesting exercise in possibilities but you onitted half the permutations by only considering the teams ahead of Edmonton
You don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

Its not just the west --In every division I believe teams are finishing up with some version of 8 or more games within their division

Considering their injuries and expectations I think they have been a remarkeable story. When the playoffs begin and the Oilers are clearing out their lockers, they will be able to look forward to next year. In the meantime the Oilers will likely be a huge thorn in the side of the other NW teams. They don`t appear to go quietly these days for anyone

If the Avs take them out tomorrow afternoon though, you have to think that even the most optimistic fan will acknowledge they are done. If the Avs lose (their 4th straight!!), that to me qualifies as crapping the bed down the stretch and they would have to contin ue to do so to some extent to get caught

San Jose just beat the Ducks 2-1 but held them WITHOUT a SHOT for the entire 3rd period. I never thought the Ducks could ever be so badly outplayed

If they lose two to Edmonton it's 1 single, solitary, lonely point.

                              And it's very nice, graphically.

                              I am forced to believe.

Sure its possible but I have to think that the Avs are just too good to continue to lose. They have already dropped 3 in a row.

That said, the Avs looked awful here on Thursday. Maybe their slide WILL be an extended one. But my money is on them playing at least .500 hockey the rest of the way meaning the OIl need to be far better than that

If the Avs win today I think a whole lot of those hopes disappear-- stay tuned
