I might take a peek at Washington v Nashville tonight-- The Caps could really assist Calgary/Van Colorad and Minny by knocking off the preds and since Washington has very real playoff chances themselves, they should be motivated

Hell look at the East

Philly in the last spot
Buffalo one point back
Washington 2 back
Florida 2 back with one more game played

makes the West look decided by comparison (not really)

Calgary,Van and Colorado all tied for 6-8th (FLames with a game in hand on Van and two on Colorado)

Nashville a full 4 points back but with lots of divisional games with only the Red Wings being a playoff bound opponent

Any combination of losses by nashville, or wins by Colorado, and Vancouver and Calgary totalling 7 will give you a playoff seed.

Magic numbers are ok but with loser points and games in hand I find it easier to look at things a little differently

If the 3 playoff teams average a very moderate point per game, they will have between 92 and 94 points

to tie the low end of that , Nashville needs a 6-3 record down the stretch


If Nashville were to go 9-0, well welcome to the playoffs with 98 points-- The others would need records like 7-3, 7-2 and 7-1 respectively to match that ( another way to say the magic number is 7 I guess) and considering the number of times they play each other, such records cannot all happen at once, although 3 point games can make it tough on Nashville

Doesn't change how very very very badly the Flames are sucking tonight. Painful to watch how very awful they are when they should be be desperate for wins to get that playoff spot

Yeah, I basically pointed to tonight as a must-win. If they can't win vs a non-playoff team with their backup (albeit a very good backup), I'm not going to expect anything in the playoffs. And they are losing badly.

Nashville lost so they have one fewer game to make up their four point deficet. THe standings would be much much scarier had they won

The Flames "should" make the playoffs and once there "anything can happen" as they say. While I am not writing off the season as hope springs eternal etc etc . .. . this team has been so wildly inconsistent and so often diappointing that I have difficulty seeing them as a real contender -- they could be a playoff shock though

Oilers are 5 down, two games against Calgary, Vancouver and Colorado.

They are almost in charge of their destiny.

Assuming no 3 point games, they will have to go 6-2 to have any reasonable hope.

This amazing run highlights just how far gone they were. Their 8-2 in the last ten is one of the best in the league and yet they still need to play at something like a .750 clip to even have a good chance. Oh and for sure there will be some three point games.

Now they are winning some games clearly, dominating some teams and looking very good. Early in the season they were often truly awful and only some amazing goaltending and an unreal shootout prowess has them even with a faint whiff of potential playoffs-- And it is faint-- The Oil would need to be AMAZING all the way to the end to make it-- Five points is tough enough but everyone they are chasing also has a game in hand except the Avs

But with al these divisional games there will be no back doors for anyone
