  • Their two games against Colorado are must-wins now, because Calgary and Vancouver play each other three times.

Even if they beat Colorado twice, they would still have to win 4 of 6 vs the rest of the division.

    Tough, but not impossible.

Nashville has to win about the same number, but they only have to beat Columbus, St. Louis and Chicago, or a Detroit that is resting players. If they go 6-2 by beating up on weaker teams, they could still steal a spot.

    • Assuming Minnesota wins all their remaining games.
Assuming Colorado wins 5 of 8
Assuming Calgary/Vancouver split with 2 wins to one.
Assuming Edmonton wins 4 of 9
Assuming Edmonton loses one game to Calgary/Vancouver, and wins one against Colorado

      This leaves:

      Minnesota 108
      Colorado 92
      Calgary 88
      Vancouver 88
      Edmonton 87

Nashville needs at LEAST 4-1-3 for 89 points
      Phoenix 5-1-3
      Columbus 6-0-3
      Chicago 7-0-2
      St.Louis 9-0-0

      Edmonton 4-1-4

Edmonton can get in with 4-1-4 if 3 of their 4 wins are against Vancouver and Calgary, and if their their other win is against Minnesota or Colorado. 1 of their other 4 games against Minnesota or Colorado must go to an OT loss.

This is a best case scenario.

      • Worst case I believe is 97 points.

        MINNESOTA-4-5-0, 99 points
        NASHVILLE-8-0-0, 98 points
        VANCOUVER-4-5-0, 97 points
        CALGARY-4-5-0, 97 points
        .............................
        COLORADO-4-4-0, 95 points
        EDMONTON-9-0-0, 95 points

Meaning all but Nashville are eliminated.

        • I cannot believe that Buffalo are not stepping up to beat Tampa-- I mean down 4-1 to Tampa??-- those are the games you need and they are not even in the thing

          • Interesting question arose from the Blackhawks game. A goal was scored on a redirect from a stick at about crossbar height, so it was not clear if it would be allowed or not. The forward (Williams) had his stick being pulled up by the Capitals' defenseman. The question, however, is that if the referee had ruled that the capitals defenseman had been responsible for Williams' stick being too high, would the goal be allowed?

              • Now its Washington thats in the boat of being a playoff contender getting handed its ass by a team that is out of contention. I don't see Chicago folding the way Tampa did though

                • Netcam HD!

We were already well aware that TSN and HD were like BFFs, but now hockey fans have yet another reason to tune in to NHL games aired on the network. Starting with tonight's tilt between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils, TSN viewers will get a look at the netminder's territory like never before. Tonight marks the debut of Sharp's AQUOS HD Netcam, which is being hailed as the first ever netcam to be used with high-def capabilities. Of course, the remainder of TSN's regular season and playoff broadcasts will take advantage of said camera, and if you're one to call goals into question due to SD replays of the puck crossing / not crossing the line, we suppose your skepticism is about to take a real hit.

                    I don't think so.

Players are responsible for their sticks.

The refs do have a bit of discretion though, so it is possible to count given what you describe. I don't think the video guys in TO would be quick to call a goal back if the ref said 'yeah but...' and it was close.

                    • Don't know if anyone else is watching the Blackhawks game, but the Bulin wall is in full force - shutting out Ovechkin and the Capitals with some incredible saves, including the best save I've ever seen (or at least the most amazing one) where he found himself on the wrong side of the net and literally leaped across the goalmouth and did a belly flop on the ice to stop a shot from the opposite side. Hopefully that ends up on Youtube at some point, it really looked spectacular in real time ...

Thats my take as well-- If another player hooks up your stick which then hits someone else in the face, the stick owner would get the penalty.

The rule says that a goal is disallowed:

"when the puck has been directed into the net by the stick of an attacking player that is above the height of the crossbar"

There may be qualifiers elsewhere but that part seems pretty clear unless you get into a dispute about what "directed " means.

                          • Things probably got a little simpler in the west tonight. With there losses tonight , Edmonton and Nashville can HOPE for a total Calgary or Vancouver melt-down, but 6 and 7 points down with 7 games to go while your opponents have 8 to go is almost impossible.

It was a crucial opportunity to close the gap and now they are left almost needing Colorado to be medicore at best while they go on a run.

The Flames? They were good throughout tonight and the Avs were surprisingly uninspired. The Flames outshot and outchanced the Avs by a wide margin and the final score was a bit closer than the game.

Huselius disappeared partway through the game- I have not heard yet if it was an injury or a benching

                            • Nothing is really settled yet.

Magic number is now 4 for Vancouver and Calgary, 3 for Minnesota.

With Vancouver/Calgary playing 3 games, Minnesota/Calgary with two and Vancouver/Minnesota with 2, that out of all the combinations:

Minnesota, Calgary clinch. Minnesota, Vancouver clinch, Vancouver, Calgary clinch.

So we know that at least two playoff spots will be taken up by two of Minnesota/Calgary/Vancouver. So that will leave the one of Minnesota/Calgary/Vancouver battling it out with Colorado/Nashville/Edmonton.

Edmonton can still make the playoffs going 3-4 if Colorado melts down, and Nashville goest 2-5. Nothing has changed for them except that the two games against Colorado are now must wins.

Nashville can also make the playoffs going 3-4, so long as Edmonton goes 2-5 and Colorado does not win a game.

Settled no but the road for folks like Edmonton and Nashville got a lot harder

I don't see how you get that two of them MUST clinch-- Imagine Vancouver goes 5-0 in those games and Calgary and Minny split their encounters-- A variety of splits could result in two of them climching spots but I don`t see how it is a `must``
