  • North Korea: Russian diplomats leave by hand-pushed trolley

A group of Russian diplomats and their families made an unusual exit out of North Korea on a hand-pushed rail trolley due to strict Covid measures.

The eight people travelled by train and bus before pushing themselves across the Russian border for about 1km (0.6miles) over train tracks.

North Korea has blocked most passenger transport to limit the virus's spread. The country maintains it has not had any confirmed cases, but observers dispute this claim.

Since early last year, trains and wagons have been forbidden to enter or leave the country. Most international passenger flights have stopped as well. The Russian diplomats were thus left with little choice.

    (snipsnap)
The diplomats had no choice as Pyongyang has banned trains from leaving as part of Covid measures.

            • It seems like the Icelandic have noticed some earthquakes and volcanic activity near Reykjavik :

At around 20:45 UTC today, 19 March, a volcanic eruption began at Geldingadalur, close to ***radalsfjall on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The eruption was first seen on a web camera positioned close the mountain. It was also confirmed on thermal satellite imagery. At the time of writing, the weather on the peninsula is wet and windy, and an orange glow can be seen in low clouds on the horizon from Reykjanesbær and Grindavík. The eruption site is in a valley, about 4.7 km inland from the southern coast of the peninsula. The coastal town of Grindavík is the closed populated region to the eruption site, located approximately 10 km to the southwest.

Earthquake activity in the region of the magma intrusion has been lower in recent days, and there is presently no intense seismicity occurring in the region. Earlier in the day, several low-frequency earthquakes were recorded below ***radalsfjall. There are presently no reports of ash fall, although tephra and gas emissions are to be expected. In line with well-rehearsed contingency plans, the aviation colour code for the Reykjanes Peninsula has been elevated to red, signifying an eruption in progress. Additional domestic restrictions have been put in place, including the closure of Reykjanesbraut – the main road from the capital region to Reykjanesbær and the international airport at Keflavík.

              Updated 18.03 at 11:33

About 400 earthquakes have been detected between midnight and seven AM on the Reykjanes peninsula. This is somewhat less seismic activity in comparison to previous mornings where the numbers have been around 1,000 earthquakes.

Yesterday around 1400 earthquakes were detected. Three were larger than magnitude 3, the largest M3.3 at 2:37AM located around 1km N of Nátthagi valley.

Today at 13:00GMT the Scientific Advisory Board of the Icelandic Civil Protection will meet to evaluate the latest monitoring data. Findings of the meeting are expected shortly after 15:00GMT.

              Updated 15.03 at 11:00

Since midnight over 1000 earthquakes have been detected on the Reykjanes Peninsula, with the most active area located south of Mt. ***radalsfjall. The largest earthquakes measured at M3,2, at 01:20 GMT last night and 07:39 GMT this morning.

Yesterday, March the 14th, over 3000 earthquakes were detected in the Reykjanes Peninsula. The largest earthquake measured M5,4 at 14:15 GMT. Yesterday evening four earthquakes measuring M3,3-M3,6 were detected, three of which were located by Mt. ***radalsfjall and the fourth northwest of Grindavík village.

              Updated 11.03 at 16:00

Over 1700 earthquakes have been measured in the Reykjanes Peninsula since midnight, few of which were over M3, the largest one measured M4,6 at 08:53 GMT this morning. As before, the magmatic activity is centered around Mt. ***radalsfjall southwest of Mt. Keilir.

Yesterday, March 10th, 2500 earthquakes were detected in the Reykjanes Peninsula, 40 of which were over M3, the largest one measuring M5,1 at 3:14 GMT.

An auto repair shop in Georgia has been accused of delivering a final wage package to a departing employee by dumping a pile of oil-covered pennies on his driveway - 91,500 of them.

The pennies amounted to the $915 (£667) that Andreas Flaten said he was owed by A OK Walker Autoworks.

Mr Flaten said he faces having to wipe down each coin individually to get rid of the grease the pile was covered in.

A OK Walker Autoworks has not commented publicly on the incident.

But on its website, it says: "And yes we accept pennies as payment! They are cash you nitwits!"

The owner, Miles Walker, told a reporter from CBS46 he did not remember dumping the coins on Mr Flaten's drive but added: "He got paid - that's all that matters."

Mr Flaten said he was a manager at the auto repair firm, which is based in Peachtree City, south of Atlanta, until he quit last November in a disagreement over when he could leave work to pick up his child from day care.

When his outstanding pay failed to arrive, Mr Flaten filed a claim with the US Department of Labor, which confirmed to US media it had contacted the repair shop three times over the issue.

The money did eventually materialise, as a pile of coins at the end of Mr Flaten's drive. On top of the pile was an envelope, with an expletive written on the front, and a pay stub inside - which was filmed by his girlfriend Olivia Oxley and posted to her Instagram account.

The pennies are now in a wheelbarrow in Mr Flaten's garage in Fayetteville, and the weight is so heavy it has deflated the tyres.

Mr Flaten said he had tried bathing the coins in a big tub of water, soap and vinegar, without success, and the only way to get the grease off was to wipe each one individually.

He added it had taken him around two hours to clean up about $5 worth.

"I think that's going to be a lot of work for money I've already worked for," he told Fox 5 Atlanta.

And it appears that paying your staff this way - while not practical, moral or fair - might also not be illegal.

"There is nothing in the regulations that dictates in what currency the employee must be paid," Eric R Lucero of the US Department of Labor was quoted by the New York Times as saying.
Andreas Flaten claims he was sent a grease-covered pile of coins by his former employer.

I would definitely look for a sympathetic friend who needed about $900 in auto repair services - which should not be difficult after this news - and work out a deal to use that grimy pile of pennies in payment. FU right back, Miles Walker!

                  • Still a dick move. Everyone seems to agree the money was legitimately owed. The shop owner went to a lot of trouble to be an ass. He was also foolish enough to post on his website that he accepts pennies in payment. Good chance that comes back to bite him.

Too bad we don't have pennies in Canada anymore. I'd have gladly sent the ex-employee a couple of rolls of them to mix in with the 90000 US pennies if they were going back as payment to the asshat ex-boss. Our pennies used to be the same size, shape, and colour as US pennies, and not accepted by any US banks..
