no. and someone with the same populist message but without trump's personal issues, i.e. being loathsome, would have a very good chance.

but of course this election isn't over yet...

    • No, I think it means a real, competent fascist is next. We got lucky with Trump being a pitiful lout. It beggars belief to say that we don't have a sufficiently immoral, ambitious and clever demagogue in this country of hundreds of millions. And Trump has discredited most of the old GOP leadership, so there's plenty of room at the top.

      • Trump encourages violence and still does to this day. I wonder if his promise of paying for the legal bills still stands.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

                • Again I see people fighting when, really IMHO, there's nothing there to really fight for.

                  Inevitability.

Necessity will unavoidably produce the next "leader" (in or out of quotes)

Elok says he's going to be an eloquent fascist?

                  I beg to differ.

Is there populism or is there popular?

                  • I will say that Trump has previously shown a knack for provoking violence, then playing innocent. He is also a fan of the truly shameless lying, which really is rare even in modern American politics. It's fortunate that he can't dissemble for ****, only brazen it out. The really barefaced falsehood doesn't work until you already control most or all of the press. Not to mention the guns.

And you punch women in the face.

Now I seriously must be going. Movie time.

indeed. but although trump has managed to gain a reputation for encouraging violence, most of the actual violence has come from the other side, and indeed there are videos of people linked to hillary's campaign literally explaining how they organise such violence at trump events. but i suppose people's perceptions really do come down to who controls the media, most of which has abandoned even the pretence of impartiality.

From my part I think there are naive, untested, untrained leaders.
