thanks for posting the article. of course one expects that kind of contempt from imbeciles like gian, but the fact that a mainstay of liberal discourse is to write off almost half the population as inferior is very worrying. this constant delegitimising of people and their views will only lead to more anger and polarisation. as you said earlier in the thread, people who feel threatened and belittled aren't just going to die quietly. some at least are going to get organised to defend their interests and their way of life. indeed, if one wanted to increase white racial consciousness, to foster a white nationalist movement, there would be no better way than what many liberals are engaged in at present.

if i were being cynical, i might even say that this is a deliberate ploy to keep the bankrupt status quo going for a little longer, 'vote for the crook, not the fascist!', but it's more likely just liberal conceit and shortsightedness.

You are getting it backwards. The real nastiness started on the right, and the left didn't respond with a similar concerted effort until about a decade after. In fact in the 90's the left was in shambles, and even D's were running away from the "liberal" moniker because of the widespread disdain that had been built up for it by right wing outlets.

Clinton actually was right of center overall and still the hatred for him from the right was unlike anything that had come before.

Stupid rednecks are still people, and one way or another we're going to have to find them a way to live with dignity. They are, after all, quite numerous, heavily armed, and they contribute a very large amount of manpower to law enforcement and the armed forces. That's not enough for them to take over for good in spite of the majority, but it is enough to make everybody miserable for a very, very long time if they feel ignored.

The tribal-minded limitations of compassion here are quite frustrating. You see people like Fezzykins saying, "Okay, so you used to rule this country, big whoop. You're outnumbered now, and your way of life ain't coming back. Adapt or die in squalor, it's that simple." But they'd get seven kinds of pissed if you said something quite similar to Native Americans . . .

The difference is that Hillary, at this point, overwhelmingly speaks for those in power. It's easy to ignore contempt when you're on top. When you're stuck in a dead-end town doing part-time crap work, it kinda stings to be written off as a stupid redneck POS.
