No, I don't believe it did. Urban-rural class antagonism has a long, long history in this country, going back to the Revolution or thereabouts at least. Remember Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, the Civil War, William Jennings Bryan, desegregation? To be fair, the rurals very frequently were ignorant, hateful and backwards--and the urbs never stopped telling them so, even when they weren't.

I had to go to church camp to actually meet unabashed conservatives and realize they weren't all vacuous mouth-breathing imbeciles or horrible redneck stereotypes. Well, no, we had one fiercely conservative family friend, but he was one of "the good ones," so to speak.
Are you trying to pretend that the level of political discourse in the 80's was anything like it became in the 90's to today?

It started with Rush Limbaugh, before then the really nasty stuff on both sides wasn't mainstream. Rush himself isn't really mainstream, but the right followed his lead against Clinton, and Trump and Gian are natural results of that.

And Trump has discredited most of the old GOP leadership, so there's plenty of room at the top.

In four years we'll get to watch Cruz and his merry fascist band of cross waving evangelical wingnuts take on Hillary in an endless campaign which will result in everyone wanting to shoot themselves to make it stop.

Those Republicans are generally quite #NeverTrump. But that's not the whole story. How much time have you spent talking with unrepentant rednecks? I've spent a fair bit, and one of their most dominant and striking (if unappreciated) cultural traits is the immense pride they take in their work. Your redneck is a [mechanic/pipefitter/welder/steelworker/waterman], because his daddy was a [mechanic/pipe fitter/welder/steelworker/waterman], and he'll smirk at you if you ever tell him he might need to know things not related to doing whatever the hell it is he does, because he defines himself by his work. Your al-gee-bra and history and such are for soft-handed liberal ******s. He don't much care for people on the dole, either--because those people, as he thinks of them, are black, and spend all their time listening to that godawful rap junk.

You can imagine how such people felt when they wound up on the dole themselves. Their chief coping mechanisms were opiates and conspiratorial thinking about how they'd be the best people in the world if it weren't for backstabbing liberal traitors.

Here it's either because of nazi germans or shifty jews (which one would think would have wiped themselves out) as well as a deep belief that greeks are a completely rotten people as well as the best people planet earth ever produced

Really? Cruz? I haven't read up much on him, but he does seem fairly clever and nasty. Of the current batch, he seems best poised to regroup. But . . . hmm. I can't really picture him as a populist. Maybe it's the punchyface.

"Gian" is shorthand for the mainstream left's current viewpoint, since he currently depicts it quite well.

As "Trump" is stand in for the mainstream right's current viewpoint, since he currently depicts it quite well.
