No, I don't believe it did. Urban-rural class antagonism has a long, long history in this country, going back to the Revolution or thereabouts at least. Remember Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, the Civil War, William Jennings Bryan, desegregation? To be fair, the rurals very frequently were ignorant, hateful and backwards--and the urbs never stopped telling them so, even when they weren't.

I grew up in a Dem household where we said "Republican" in the same way you'd say "tapeworm," and for most of my childhood I never met anybody who implied I shouldn't be liberal. I had to go to church camp to actually meet unabashed conservatives and realize they weren't all vacuous mouth-breathing imbeciles or horrible redneck stereotypes. Well, no, we had one fiercely conservative family friend, but he was one of "the good ones," so to speak.

It started with Rush Limbaugh, before then the really nasty stuff on both sides wasn't mainstream. Rush himself isn't really mainstream, but the right followed his lead against Clinton, and Trump and Gian are natural results of that.

No, I think it means a real, competent fascist is next. We got lucky with Trump being a pitiful lout. It beggars belief to say that we don't have a sufficiently immoral, ambitious and clever demagogue in this country of hundreds of millions. I've spent a fair bit, and one of their most dominant and striking (if unappreciated) cultural traits is the immense pride they take in their work. Your redneck is a [mechanic/pipefitter/welder/steelworker/waterman], because his daddy was a [mechanic/pipe fitter/welder/steelworker/waterman], and he'll smirk at you if you ever tell him he might need to know things not related to doing whatever the hell it is he does, because he defines himself by his work. Your al-gee-bra and history and such are for soft-handed liberal ******s. He don't much care for people on the dole, either--because those people, as he thinks of them, are black, and spend all their time listening to that godawful rap junk.

Really? Cruz? I haven't read up much on him, but he does seem fairly clever and nasty. Of the current batch, he seems best poised to regroup. But . . . hmm. I can't really picture him as a populist. Maybe it's the punchyface.
