It's completely different than the government outing someone that is gay.
The government collects census information that records certain things too - does that mean this information could be legally released and tracked? Same principle behind these things.

If you want to know who is gay, just load Grindr on your iPhone (I assume you already have it, Ben). It's gaydar in the smartphone era.
    One, I don't have a smartphone.

Two, I don't have a phone at all. (hello, deaf, remember?)

Three, why would I use that? I'm sure you fantasize about that - but I'll never appear there.

Four, no, I really don't care, and don't want to know. What people choose to share is different then what is going on here.

Ben, do you dislike gay people? didn
Depends on the person who is gay. I have had legitimate bad experiences (one landlord in particular), that I've spoken about earlier. He didn't understand the concept of 'locked doors'.

Nah, Ben is a nice person, but unfortunately his religion tells him that his secret feelings are wrong
Yes, I want to be the one in the middle of Salma Hayek and Jennifer Connelly. Thank you for sharing my secret feelings. Now everyone knows.

IIRC he was in the navy.

Please explain why this isn't responsible news coverage. I bet that many people would like to know wich of their neghbours are armed.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Would it be appropriate to publish the names and addresses of people with communicable diseases? I have a right to know if my neighbor has tuberculosis, or is HIV positive, right?
                  John Brown did nothing wrong.

There are many worse choices. I think it's a real fine choice. In fact, I think it's such a fine choice that I'm having trouble dislodging the thought of them both.

Just a wild guess - what you mention are treatable diseases (you even have to have sexual relations for HIV). Guns on the other hand kills indiscriminately (hope I got that rigth, otherwise HC may say bad things about me) if you are healthy or not.

That makes no sense. As if treatment makes disease irrelevant, and furthermore, I'm to believe that gun shot wounds are impossible to treat?

Sorry, I was clearly wrong - gun bullets in the heart or brain are no problem, just get to your local doctor in a day or two and he'll cure you
