A New York newspaper is under criticism for publishing the names and addresses of local gun owners on Monday.

In a piece titled, "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," the Journal News requested the names and addresses of local residents who are licensed to own handguns through Freedom of Information Law requests.

The article includes an interactive map of Westchester and Rockland counties that allows readers to view those who have a license to own handguns around them.

It's public information, I guess, but seems unethical and intrusive.

A competing paper has published the names and addresses of everyone involved in that decision from top to bottom.

I doubt it. I mean maybe women and those with children but I doubt most men really need to know there's a sex offender next door. Besides, they did their time and shouldn't be punished further or ostracized on the outside. Most are probably reformed and will not commit an illegal sex act again. Meanwhile, these gun owners still currently possess guns!
