Isn't this island near a town or something? Doesn't that town have a police force? Why did the police have to come all the way from Oslo?"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Something just jumped out at me as I was skimming ABB's manifesto/journal/cut&paste repository. On p. 1379, where he's holding a Q&A session with himself(?):
Q: What tipped the scales for you? What single event made you decide you wanted to continue planning and moving on with the assault?
A: For me, personally, it was my government’s involvement in the attacks on Serbia (NATO bombings in 1999) several years back. It was completely unacceptable how the US and Western European regimes bombed our Serbian brothers. All they wanted was to drive Islam out by deporting the Albanian Muslims back to Albania. When the Albanians refused, they really didn’t have any choice but to use military force. By disallowing the Serbians the right for self-determination over their sovereign territory they indirectly dug a grave for Europe. A future where several Mini-Pakistan’s would eventually will be created in every Western European capital. This is unacceptable, completely unacceptable.
That reminds me of another political murder. Swedish Foreign Minister, Anna Lindh (social democrat), who was stabbed to death by Mijailo Mijailovic in 2003. Here's from a profile of him:
"Mijailovic himself told police as he confessed to the killing: "I think it was Jesus, that he has chosen me."
An "inner voice" told him to attack Lindh when he entered the NK department store where she was clothes shopping without bodyguards, he said.
"One can't resist the voices, one can't manage to stand up to them. They are a real pain when they come," he told police.
But investigators have ruled out the possibility of an act dictated by temporary madness, believing instead that he had every intention of killing the popular foreign minister.
Mijailovic himself claims that he had no political motive, but witnesses have told Swedish newspapers that he "hated Anna Lindh", and never forgave her for her backing of NATO airstrikes against Belgrade in 1999.
"He was very affected when Lindh said that it was OK to bomb Serbia," during the war in Kosovo, a friend of Mijailovic told Aftonbladet.
"He's a patriot. Serbia before everything else. He wanted to participate in the war when he was 15 years old," the friend added."
If that is true, the attack on the Norwegian Labour Party on Friday might have been only the second political attack in Scandinavia that was motivated (in part, yes, but possibly crucially) by the intervention in Kosovo.
There's no reason that I know to believe there's a personal connection between Breivik and Mijailovic. They do appear to be two very different personalities. The former is a methodical and cold-blooded killer who'd apparently been planning years ahead and the other's a known psych patient who murdered opportunistically. I still find it an odd coincidence.
