  • VA, LA, Texas, and Arkansas are the only CSA states that currently have unemployment rates lower than the national average. All other Southern states are worse off.
That's about half of the total population in the CSA states. So unemployment rates in the South are about the same as the rest of the US, which is a significant improvement.

    • Having been born and raised in the South, and then having lived in Yankee NY and now hipster Portland, I can attest that the South was the most racist of them all. There's racism everywhere, but you have to go to the South to get that special good ol' boy, institutionalized-to-the-point-of-normalcy racism that seems like you've entered a time warp to the 1950s. Naturally, BK loves it there.

      • In the management of my school there were the following:

        3 white ladies,
        2 hispanic ladies,
        1 white guy,
        1 asian lady,
        1 asian guy.

So I'm not quite sure how 'racist' the south is.

The other part of this is the emigration from the South of significant people in the first half of the 20th century, to seek jobs up north. Not only has this stopped, but it's reversed.
The south has been forced to abolish slavery, treat black people like human beings, the south has public schools, land grant colleges and public funding for infrastructure. Pretty much everything the northerners wanted in the 1860's is now in force in the south, except for high tariffs on manufactured goods. Yeah, they won and modernized the place.

          • 1. The south got ****ing trashed during the Civil War. There are probably thirty battlefields within driving distance of my house. Virginia and Georgia got basically flattened by the Union armies. THE SOUTH LOST.

            2. That said, today the South is doing much better economically than the Northeast, essentially because of right-to-work laws. So the South's seeing a major resurgence right now.

            3. Not that any of this matters, unless you've got something up your butt for the old days of the Confederacy. At the end of the day, people just go where there's work and/or freedom.

              • I don't approve of his use of a vague phrase like "within driving distance". Isn't every Civil War battlefield technically within driving distance of anyone who lives in the continental United States (or Canada, for that matter)?

                      Thanks HC.

That's all I was trying to say and I'm glad another poster posted it. If people have to go South to find freedom, doesn't that speak volumes?

More union soldiers were killed in combat than southern soldiers.

No, unless you think they're also within walking distance.

That's because the union soldiers were usually on the offensive.

                            • HC, what evidence do you have that "right-to-work" laws were the main factor?

You mean the freedom to have the government tell an employer that they can't make a specific type of contract with a union?
