But since you mention it, modern drugs (antiretrovirals) can more or less hold HIV at bay, albeit at considerable expense and with a number of side effects. To my knowledge, there's no equivalent treatment for massive blood loss except a quick transfusion.

I'd take my chances. I think my chance of getting ran over in a SUV by Sarah Palin, and having my limbs chopped off by a samurai sword are less then me getting AIDS from tainted blood because some ******* decided it was more important that he feel better about himself by infecting others.

Look, the answer is simple. It's all supply and demand. If the laws change, you'll see a 30 fold increase in autonomous donations. That's what tainted blood does to the system. People get used to donating their own blood for surgeries.

It's actually rather rare that in an accident where you require a transfusion that you are going to walk away from it. Chances are you die on the scene of the accident.

The first group of people that will start doing this will be the health professionals. Why? Because they know how the system works.
