  • Ban on gay blood donors upheld by panel

I think this is so ****ing stupid. They test all donors anyway. WTF is the difference? Don't be crying over lack of blood giving and then shut out millions from giving. Idiocy.

A government health committee Friday recommended not changing the ban on gay men donating blood but also called for new research on alternative policies, citing flaws in the current rules.

Gay men have been prohibited from giving blood since 1985. But momentum to change the ban has grown recently, with advocacy groups, blood-collection organizations and members of Congress calling for the Food and Drug Administration to revise the donation rules.

The Health and Human Services Committee, in its recommendations, noted that current policy permits some potentially high-risk blood donations and prevents some possible low-risk donations. But the panel said existing research isn’t adequate to justify lifting the ban. The FDA has final say over
    the blood rules.

Gay rights groups said the blood donation policy discriminates against gay and bisexual men. They point out a heterosexual man or a woman having sex with an HIV-positive partner is restricted from giving blood for one year from that contact, while gay men face a lifetime ban.

The HHS committee listened to often-emotional testimony from people supporting ending the ban and those pushing the status quo or more incremental change.

Nathan Schaefer of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, an HIV/AIDS organization, said most gay men practice safe sex and are HIV-negative, and should be considered a low-risk donor group. The HIV/AIDS organization, which has pushed for revised rules, noted Italy and Spain screen for high-risk behaviors rather than sexual orientation.

And Lee Storrow, a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, told the committee that he gave blood in high school. Now, after having sex with a male, he can no longer donate, he said. “I hope I can one day donate blood again,’’ Storrow said.

The Red Cross and other blood-collection organizations support a one-year ”deferral,” or waiting period, on donations after male-to-male sex, saying the current ban is scientifically unwarranted.

A one-year deferral period on blood donations by men who have had sex with another man would yield an estimated 89,000 additional pints annually, according to a study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law.

The U.S. periodically has blood shortages, but the testimony at the two-day meeting focused primarily on the safety of the supply, not availability.

Several countries, including Canada, have a similar ban as the U.S.

The American Plasma Users Coalition, representing people who depend on the blood supply to maintain health, urged additional research, forecasting that revisions in the donation rules eventually will be made.

The other week, a bunch of leading doctors in Canada released a report stating the banning of gay men from giving blood is hurting, not helping, Canada as a whole.

I've stopped caring. Don't want my blood or organs, see if I care. I just wanted to help.

In order to determine if this is at all a worthwhile risk mitigant, you have to consider two factors:

      1) How much higher is the prevalence of HIV among gay men than among straight men
      2) How often do the tests fail

If the test gives a false negative one time for every million positives correctly identified, then who the **** cares. If it's one in a hundred....then we would have to consider this as possibly worthwhile.

They kind of addressed the risk from a Gay.
Nathan Schaefer of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, an HIV/AIDS organization, said most gay men practice safe sex and are HIV-negative, and should be considered a low-risk donor group.
I don't know, but I don't find that hard to believe.

Asher, I know. It's just so damned stupid. I don't like giving blood. I've done it twice and I hated it.
If those people are going to solicit donations, they better take all the good blood that they can get. I've not giving it again. I say I'm not. That's subject to change.

The problem is it should be behaviourally, not by orientation

That's what the Canadian study looked at

There's virtually no difference in risk when you simply look at monogamy rather than sexuality

They proposed letting gay men who have been monogamous or celibate for more than a year donate. Seems reasonable to me

The risk isn't being gay, the risk is being promiscuous. Unfortunately many gay men are very very promiscuous (societal problem, topic for another thread). I just find it insulting and offensive to be told I can't donate blood because lots of gays are whores

            As far as HIV prevalence:

That's ****ing ridiculous. Asher, the gay/bi community obviously still has a problem with unprotected sex...

Yes, more young people are actually having sex without condoms than before

I don't understand it, because I am now old

                  a) Anal sex is far more dangerous from an HIV transmission point of view than vaginal sex (while oral is virtually riskless)
                  b) Yes, I agree that the problem is mostly promiscuity. Adding a monogamy followup may be a worthwhile compromise.

Funny thing is, starting in high school I've given blood a few times (not in recent years as my fear of needles became a bit more pronounced, which is a shame as otherwise I'm willing) and for whatever reason, I was never asked if I was gay. Not directly, not indirectly. Perhaps the Nevada Blood Bank was willing to turn a blind eye to a blind policy?

If we're going based on activity (anal sex), then shouldn't it be based on the bottom?

The chance of getting HIV while being a top in anal sex is no different than vaginally, far as I know

Many gay men are exclusively tops

That would be one ****ing awesome survey

                            1) Do you have sex
                            2) How often do you have sex
                            3) Who do you have sex with
                            4) DO YOU TAKE IT UP THE ASS?

                              1) The rate of HIV infections among black males is huge, and my impression is that there is a very large community of black men on the DL (so that a lot of black MSM are a danger to black females)
                              2) Penetrative vaginal sex is far less dangerous than receptive vaginal sex for HIV transmission
                              3) IV drugs obviously plays a role, and it may be that a lot of black male IV drug users are MSM (say, for prostitution). So they wouldn't show up in the straight black male numbers...
