  • Historically the possession of monarchs, it is no longer the private property of the reigning monarch and cannot be sold by him/her, nor do the revenues from it belong to the monarch personally.
The long and tedious article goes on to explain how the property does not belong to the state either, it belongs to the Crown.

The PM of Britain cannot sell the land, and the revenues do not belong to parliament either. The revenues are granted to the state by the Queen in exchange for civil list payments.

so first, you claim that it's all personally owned by "The Queen".

now you refute our counter-claims by pointing out that it doesn't belong to the prime minister either

      UNREFUTABLE LOGIC

      • Where did I say it personally belonged to the Queen? She inherits it through the crown.

Civil list payments are only about 8 million pounds a year for the entire royal family.

So, the Queen earns 213 million pounds for the state, and they pay her 8. She returns 26x as much to the government as they return to her.

That doesn't even include the amount she pays in taxes for the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster.

Yep, the state has a pretty good deal with the civil list. They pay the Queen a pittance, and earn millions more off the estate.

              What's so difficult to understand?

I don't think he'd notice at all with the garbage strike.

Then of course there are the reasons that Anglicans wouldn't want to merge with Catholics like

                              1. the whole infalliable pope thing
                              2. ordination of women
                              3. ability of clergy to marry
                              4. even the position on homosexuality (this issue is wracking the Anglican church with the possibilities of a split between North America and other regions as well as some parishes hiving off within North America whichever way the chruch lands

So I doubt that symbolism versus transubstantiation would qualify as the MAIN reason. Although it does stand as a symbol of RC bigotry I guess in that members of other churches are unsuited to participate. In many other Christian churches they usually say that all are invited.

Oh and Asher -- you can decline by not going up-- or by not attending in the first place-- I generally spend my Sunday mornings taking the children to a park, or swimming or whatever. I figure that any benevolent forgiving God won't mind.

Yes, this is a big issue.

                                2. ordination of women
                                3. ability of clergy to marry
                                4. even the position on homosexuality (this issue is wracking the Anglican church with the possibilities of a split between North America and other regions as well as some parishes hiving off within North America whichever way the chruch lands
None of these three are an issue. There are many Anglicans and 'ex-Anglicans' that felt abandoned by their church on these issues. For them they see the Catholics as upholding the traditions which they themselves still believe.

So I doubt that symbolism versus transubstantiation would qualify as the MAIN reason. It's not bigotry. Some churches really don't see the Lord's Supper as all that important. Catholics do. Catholics have it as the centre of every mass, while most of the denominations that have intercommunion, won't have it more then once a month. They themselves don't offer it all the time so why are they complaining when the Catholic church which believes in the Real Presence turns them away?

Oh and Asher -- you can decline by not going up-- or by not attending in the first place-- I generally spend my Sunday mornings taking the children to a park, or swimming or whatever. I figure that any benevolent forgiving God won't mind.
He might simply say, "I never knew you". I think it's good to spend time with your kids, and I respect you as a person Japher, but honestly, it's not an either/or decision. You can do both.
