JOhn Kerry Doing his level Best to Energize the base
Kerry's statement was a mangle. I saw the speech on TV. But that's really not the issue. He's completely inept. It might as well been a Freudian slip. He's making it too easy for the Republicans (as he always has). And his response, and the response from most Democratic "strategists", is pathetic. Instead of just admitting the mistake, they seem hell-bent on making it seem like the Republicans are somehow twisting Kerry's words.
They aren't twisting your words, Mr. Kerry! You screwed up! Just come right out and admit your mistake. What is so hard about that? Instead, Kerry is pretending like it never happened and that Bush and the Republicans are the ones at fault here.
Is Kerry in some kind of alternate reality? Does he not understand how most people are perceiving this? It's like he has no concept of what is going on. He's completely clueless.
It's pathetic really.
It reminds me of when Joe Namath was drunk and hitting on that ESPN reporter. You almost felt sorry for the guy. Except I think even Joe realized afterwards that he ****ed up.

Shouldn't Kerry share some of the blame, seeing as he voted for the war?
But not the funding.
Kerry attacks the administration for sending the troops without body armor, then he and his buddies vote against the funding to supply body armor. I'm pretty sure that's not a stronger position.
That's the problem with the Democrats. They don't actually want the conflict to end, the killings to stop, and the soldiers to come home. No, they would rather keep them there and exploit the political milage.
What's worse, these guys think that if they win Congress and the White House the terrorists will turn around and say, "Hey, you guys really are good people. I guess we were attacking the wrong folks. Sorry about the bombs and beheadings and all."
Context is clear its all about education and opportunity for the kids at Psadena City College. Not some BS about Bush.
Yeah... I just wish he'd admit it and go with it, instead of backpedaling.

Interpretation: If Bush had studied hard and done his homework, we wouldn't be in the Iraq mess we are in right now.
The full quote makes it clear he was talking about Bush and using him as an example of why you should get an education. But the Repubs are editing the context out so its unclear who Kerry is talking about - someone who is stuck in Iraq. Thats strange, do Repubs really believe US soldiers are stuck in Iraq? I thought they were there doing the Lord's work...
Hmm. I think I know what Sen. John Kerry intended with his comments — i.e., if Bush, et al., had done more homework and more research regarding Iraq, we might not be in the situation we're in now — but it's said in a way that can be spun by certain parties to sound like Kerry slammed folks in the military.
His intention has been edited from the quote, Bush and all references to his lack of knowledge were removed. Another example of Repubs taking what others say out of context to smear them.

perhaps Ogie can supply the full quote, I'm having trouble locating it
According to AP the pathetic spin is as follows
Kerry said the comment in question was "a botched joke about the president and the president's people, not about the troops ... and they know that's what I was talking about."
A Kerry spokeswoman, Amy Brundage, said Kerry's prepared text had called for him to say: "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."
Reminder, actual quote and initial crowd response
You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq.
Crowd reaction
Kerry then told the students that if they were able to navigate the education system, they could get comfortable jobs - "If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq," he said to a mixture of laughter and gasps.
I guarantee speaking at a pro-angelides student rally no one would be gasping at another slam against Bush.
As for prepared remarks to be something other than what Kerry said, you'll pardon my skepticism.
In related news, all the Dem candidates Kerry was about to stump for, are all telling him to bugger off. Yep no damage done. Keep on fighting Kerry.

My problem for interpreting this incident is that since Kerry is such a liar his original gaffe becomes a paradox.
By original gaffe I assume you aren't refering to the Genghis Khan quote.
