Agreed. The point was moreso the motivation of the hard right was in question. Those who are undivided at this time are probably not so much. The decisions at this point are whether the respective bases are motivated and what turn outs one can expect from the the respective bases. Its teh classic Rove strategy. Don't necessarily court new potential voters instead make sure the ones you count as your bases absolutely vote.

By all accounts the repugs were looking to have a sluggish turnout from their base courtesty Foley and other scandals. (well at least if you listen to MSM that is )

Sure but so was your statement I don't think we need to examine Kerry's statement for long to see it is weird and stupid.

          His statement = false

My statement = paraphrasing the intent of his statement = false

Of course my statment was false.

Unless of course you are attempting to say my paraphrasing his intent was a misread. However, I don't see how anyone could read it as anything other than a snide slap at those serving in Iraq. (Afterall those that serve(d) in Iraq clearly are comprised of dead enders, slackers, and low brows who couldn't hack it college life )

Ogie Oglethorpe has always proclaimed himself a conservative and makes no bones about it.

That being said I did not and would not vote for W.

edit - Truth in adverstising. I did vote for W in 2000 over Gore. But it was a coin flip. (Moron on the one hand vs. someone I was diametrically opposed to)

I agree it's a stupid comment to make, though I generally agree with the underlying sentiment behind it.

Ahhh yes the ever gracious John F'in Kerry deflects in a deceptive manner predicted by our own Tassadar. Good one Tass. You get the pool money.

If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they're crazy. This is the classic G.O.P. playbook. I’m sick and tired of these despicable Republican attacks that always seem to come from those who never can be found to serve in war, but love to attack those who did.

I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq. It disgusts me that these Republican hacks, who have never worn the uniform of our country lie and distort so blatantly and carelessly about those who have.

The people who owe our troops an apology are George W. Bush and Dick Cheney who misled America into war and have given us a Katrina foreign policy that has betrayed our ideals, killed and maimed our soldiers, and widened the terrorist threat instead of defeating it. These Republicans are afraid to debate veterans who live and breathe the concerns of our troops, not the empty slogans of an Administration that sent our brave troops to war without body armor.

Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they’re afraid to debate real men. And this time it won’t work because we’re going to stay in their face with the truth and deny them even a sliver of light for their distortions. No Democrat will be bullied by an administration that has a cut and run policy in Afghanistan and a stand still and lose strategy in Iraq.
Not complacent with causing the initial damage, Kerry decides to make a bigger idiot of himself and create even more of a mobilizing issue of it. God he just can't help himself.

I don't recall anyone anywhere stating that Bush's actions, statements and/or policies don't mobilize the Democratic base.

I think everyone paying attention to American politics in the last 6 years pretty much knows that the Democrats are all about bashing Bush.

Can you explain to me which Democrats haven't been bashing Bush at some point in the last 6 years?

Not a very good one, though, because the more they flog, the more Iraq can be brought into play. What's worse - a one time, poorly worded remark which could be construed as insulting to troops in the field, or an ongoing, poorly executed policy which is getting them killed at the same pace as the original invasion almost four years ago, with no end in sight?

Of course McCain, typically a friend to Kerry weighed in as follows:

The acid response might have stopped there but the Republican party's number one veteran, Senator John McCain, added this sizzling retort: "an insult to every soldier serving in combat, and should deeply offend any American with an ounce of appreciation for what they suffer and risk so that the rest of us can sleep more comfortably at night."
                          Ouch.

Sava - What is the greater motivation? Musings of a failed candidate or musings of a failed president?

Ogie - I like Kerry's 'clarification'. Where is the additional harm in those words?

To mobilize the base it most certainly can. The base will eat this up and it will reinforce all the ugly stereotypes the right base has that the Dems are secretly hoping the stupid red state dupes over in Iraq get all shot to hell as they a) have it coming for being so stupid and b) are a necessary loss to show up how stupid Bush is.
