I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Hey, you must think you have a talent in mindreading or something. I'm one of the only posters who hasn't expressed an opinion in this thread.
What is that, a nonopinion opinion? We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. - Abraham Lincoln

Do you have links to these polls, Dan? I've heard the US has some popularity from younger Iranians but they didn't have to live thru the Shah's regime. Also, I suspect they were lied to by their more recent dictators and when they found out the US is not the Great Satan their opinion turned more favorable, time heals all wounds...
I had American-Iranian friends in LA and they made regular trips to Iran (for the skiing ) so the religious zealots there couldn't prevent the spread of culture and ideas. If had to live thru the Khomeni regime and I learned the US tried to stop it, I'd view the US more favorably. But that ignores what the Shah was like.
Even the opinions of Americans and Vietnamese towards each other has improved dramatically. But the overall point here is that all these places became battlefields with several becoming full blown civil wars. I'm sure a majority of Iraqis will like us in 10 or 20 years too, they will be the ones who suffered under Saddam and got payback on their enemies because the US stepped in.

You got a funny way of talking!
So, what exactly is your opinon then?
Re my opinion, I haven't yet formed a complete, strong opinion on the issue. That's why I was asking questions. Not that the answers have been any good so far.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. Basically, it's an absolutely atrocious idea, and it's pathetic that some in our gov't may favor such a "solution."
I don't see how the US is going to be able to back out of a promise, regardless of the consquences. If you have any faith in the principle of self-determination, the Kurds should have their own state.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

An independent Kurdistan?

Based on the "principle of self-determination," who gets Kirkuk? FYI, the Kurds don't want an independent state without Kirkuk, and if they don't get it they're going to fight for it. As would the Arabs."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before.
