Admit it: the series needs killing. It's getting stale and tired.
I agree, its getting stale and tired. A different game with the same theme would be most welcomed! Civ, Civ 2 and Civ 3 were basically variations on the same game. A different game, with different game mechanics, but with the same theme would be most refreshing!

Everything's getting more sales than ever. There's more computers than ever.

I'm sure there'd be some pertinent statistic you could take about how many people who played Civ2 bought and played and are still playing Civ3, and of how many people who bought Civ3 still play it and will play Civ4. From looking at the trends on Apolyton, you see everyone start with a game, play it, love it, buy the next one, not like it so much, drift to the OT or leave. I suspect the Civ franchise has a massive turnover of buyers, with a large proportion getting bored with the whole concept rather rapidly after the initial obsession.

Civilization has a reputation as one of the greatest game series' of all time (whether or not you believe it is is your opinion, but it's true). I ask casual gamers I know in real life and go around various sites which broadcast Civ news to "normal" people, and trust me, they love the series...

Well, I am one of those who strongly prefers Alpha Centauri over Civ III. I can only hope that any Civ IV uses some of the features of that game rather than Civ III.

But this raises the question, does it not, as to whether Alpha Centauri is included in the Civilization franchise?

Yeah, it would work to base Civ4 directly on SMAC.

Hmmm... if Firaxis and Atari have parted, who will publish and distribute the new Pirates game?

To be honest, who distributes a game isn't nearly as important as who develops it... I'd be gutted if Firaxis had gone belly up but this sounds like the Atari label being streamlined for jerk-react style games, putting the "brain" games into something else.
