  • Also ... ignoring constitutionality ... I find it very disturbing how people think deporting those who were born in the US is a good thing, or even an acceptable thing. It is a morally reprehensible and economically stupid thing.

    • But in short: 8.4 percent of the resident adult population of the United States in 2012 was the child of a person born outside the country. That same year, 4.5 million children born in the U.S. lived with at least one undocumented parent.
So in just 1 year (2012), 4.5 million children were born to at least one undocumented parent. If you deport all the undocumented (eg. illegal) people, you're talking about breaking up tens of millions of families and/or deporting tens of millions of citizens. The exact number of those orphaned or deported with both parents isn't sure, but likely in the several millions.

There is just no way to go about this that isn't monstrous and stupid.

The law still doesn't make sense when applied to people who are in the country illegally. Making the children of legal residents citizens makes sense, allowing the children of illegal residents to automatically become citizens is silly.

If those people were born illegally and you are going to deport the parents then it's even worse to not deport the illegal kids as well.

So is Carte Blanche acceptance of parents who get pregnant and have illegally entered the US, have a baby (ies) and expect that will circumvent our Countries rules and regulations.

I am merely asking where does it stop?

Who foots this Abyss of..how did you put it..."morally reprehensible and economically stupid thing."

I love children, have two and six grandchildren that I simply adore and would do anything for.

However the depth and breadth and width of my commitment is, it would be foolish to think I could simply give them everything they want and need, I could try for sure but would eventually fail.

This is where my opinion is of this you speak of, it is an exploitation and sad one at that. I would say deport the parents who are not citizens and the children they have born here, the children cannot fend for themselves....hard choice but where do we stop?

This the USA land of the free however we have laws. Law says you have to do certain things to legally enter the US and if you havent why should the offspring be granted immunity from such rules?

The rules exist for all for without rules we would perish. We cannot take care of our own citizens so why take on more that for all intents and purposes are here illegally?

I know it sounds harsh but I for one am tired of immigrants coming here, being a strain on our country, causing many folds and tiers of issues, economical, crimes and education for three quick ones.

This is how I stand, not trying to be an Azzhat though just one voicing his opinion sir.

              • Almost no one wants to deport families. The aim is to deport trouble makers that aren't contributing to society. We are not going to see mass deportation.

                • The hypocrisy of claiming to support rule of law while holding the 14th amendment in contempt is remarkable.

It makes sense in regards to America's history. We are a nation of immigrants, and for the first century+ anyone who could make it here was allowed in. Being born on American soil was "making it here".

It also makes sense economically. We need more workforce.

What doesn't make sense (at least morally) are the absurd immigration laws which have not allowed in enough immigrants in legally to fill the jobs we need done, so illegals have had to risk their lives and being deported to fill those jobs.

                    • Most countries (excluding a few in Europe and Japan, and the oil countries I think) also have the law that born on the soil makes you a citizen. Otherwise you easily end up with a large group of people that are citizens of no country.

Viewing it as exploitation of the system by the parents is fine. Deporting the children is not, they are constitutionally, legally, US citizens.

Breaking up the families is a worse moral wrong than the exploitation of the system in the first place. People who want to enter the US so their children can have a better future may be legally wrong, but they are trying to do what is best for their children and I can at least admire them for that desire.

There is no "born illegally". Being born on American soil means you are legally an American citizen. Full stop.

Yes, breaking up families is worse than just deporting people. It doesn't mean deporting US citizens isn't terrible and wrong. (Not to mention unconstitutional.)

Part of what makes America great is birthright citizenship. Many countries do not do that and have stratification between those who have been and lived in the country and those who have immigrated from elsewhere. That America does not have this was a conscious choice of the Founders of the United States.

Now, there are rules, and that people have broken and abused the rules to get into the United States is a problem. These people should be deported. However, the child born in the United States is not responsible for the actions of their parents. They did not make the choice to enter into the US - they had that situation forced upon them. They are innocent and do not know anything other than America.

The solution, IMO is to give parents a choice - separation from their child or leaving America together.

14th Amendment to the US constitution. How else would you reconcile those born in territories not originally part of the United States? Should someone born in Texas in 1820 not be considered an American citizen, despite never moving and having lived in Texas for the last 45 years?
