  • Maybe Ben just can't compete with smart women anymore
I have a degree. Did just fine. There's something wrong when a class of 25 has just 3 men. In a history degree.

How else do we explain the decline in workforce participation for men from 25+ to 50? And no - most men are done with school by 25. We are actually seeing enrollment declines among men in college, fwiw.
My sources are talking about the OVERALL LABOR POOL. Are you mentally defective?

Nobody is talking about men. Rather the ENTIRE LABOR FORCE.

My source went to age 24. Many degrees do take longer than four years, idiot.

We aren't seeing enrollment declines. You're STUPID.

      NO SOURCES once again.

And your sources also go on to talk about the historical lows among men 25-50.

I am talking about men. I suggest you address the points. The majority of those who are out of the workforce are not boomers. By your own source.

              NO SOURCE NO ARGUMENT, Ben.

It's obvious you didn't read the source I posted.

24-54 year old participation rates have held steady.

              • And how does that deal with my point that they are at historical lows for 25-50 year old MEN?

                • And how do you deal with the fact that the 24-54 year old (sorry I said 25, the source says 24 corrected) have held steady? I'm talking about the ENTIRE labor force. I don't give two ****s about men like you not being able to compete anymore.

So many more women entering the workforce... that must be tough for you.

The fact that the job cuts have disproportionately hit men?

Ah. Wiser heads would suggest that given the segments of the economy and the fact that men tend to work in primary industry jobs that cuts here will lead to declines in workforce participation elsewhere.

Women in general are down too, though not as much. Their participation peaked in 2007, and has dropped every year since.

I'm done for today. This moron makes up numbers, won't back up any of them and I think I've said enough to destroy his entire argument as it is. I work full time, so I think I'm just going to enjoy my weekend out!

Not really. There being so few men have meant opportunities for me as a teacher. The ladies don't like teaching boys in general and don't do as well with them, so I've generally ended up with classes of mostly boys.

                          • According to this chart:

Since 2004 - workforce participation among those 24-54 has declined from 82.9 to 80.9, contrary to what Giancarlo claimed that it has held steady. It has not.

Since 2004 - workforce participation among those 55-65 has increased from 36.2 to 40.0, contrary to what Giancarlo claimed, and corroborating my statement.

Since 2004 - workforce participation among those 65+ has increased from 14.4 to 18.6 contrary to what Giancarlo claimed, and corroborating my statement.

Since 2004 - workforce participation among those 75+ has increased from 8.8 to 11.3 contrary to what Giancarlo claimed and corroborating my statement.

Men 25-54 have declined from 90.5 to 88.2 percent. Women in the same age grouping have dropped from 75.3 to 73.9.

                              • Another interesting fact, women under the age of 55, are less likely to work now than in 1994. (74.6 to 73.8). Biggest change is the 16-19 group, 51.3 percent were in the workforce in 1994 - now just 34.5 are.

Of the 55+ category - it was just 24 percent in 2004, now it is 35 percent.
