That what such people in the 19th century did ... don't let their kids have an education and instead send their kids as child laborers into the mines, where their work was duely needed because they could work in corridors with lower ceilingsYes, some did do this, but if they wanted their children to get an education there were other paths. What you're talking about is what a family would do if none of them had an education.

Well, if as you say, 'teaching religion destroys education' it would follow that believers couldn't get a degree because of all the religious nonsense infecting their brains.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

In the USA I assume the kids would have to go to a parochial schoolTamsin (Lost Girl): "I am the Harbinger of Death. I arrive on winds of blessed air. Air that you no longer deserve."

Typical from your point of view... you have no compassion for the poor. Your typical self centered view again shows why you should really reread the life of Christ.Keep on Civin'

Hm ... in germany IIRC first prussia and then after unification the whole of germany had access to the free public school system ... therefore the widow would just have sent their kids to the Volksschule, free of charge
In the USA I assume the kids would have to go to a parochial school
If a widow with children lost her husband, she would go live with her family if they were still alive, or she would get married again. Some would put their children up for adoption - in the sense that another family member would look after the children.
There were many options. We assume that just because today is this world, that the 19th century would make similar decisions. The reality is very different.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

It has nothing to do with the fact that a widow/woman with four children might not be able to afford $1000 a month, and it's a good thing the state provides a free education.Keep on Civin'

So again... Your point? What does that have to do with today and why are you bringing the 19th century into the discussion.

Because of voting blocs, people are going to cut off public schooling long before they cut off welfare or social security. Of course that is IMO. But I've seen what I've seen and I will stick with that.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

The whole discussion now is how to lower the cost of higher education, and you are babbling about how public schooling is going to be cut off. The first party that suggests that they are going to stop public schools is going to find themselves with no support.Keep on Civin'
