Right. When an atheist says that his worldview is going to inform his policy, nobody bats an eye. I disagree, vehemently, with Kennedy. I believe that America was founded as a Christian nation, and that it would be sustained by the Christian faith. Well noone is going to "force" any church to do something that it doesn't want to do.
OTOH everyone is asked to respect the laws of the land that are a culmination of values.
People decide to live together in societies and to be governed by laws that steam from the morality of said era.
If you want a culmination of state and church it's there and it's called Iran (or Turkey more and more).
The separation of church and state ALSO protects the church.
