The UN's low prediction is actually rather robustly optimistic on future birthrates. I think in the next 10-15 years we'll actually see world population start to decline. Which means big problems for the economy. We're already seeing aging effects in China and Japan and in Russia.

A decline in the world population is not a bad thing. There is absolutely no necessity for the world population to keep rising, and if it does we have some incredibly uncomfortable and dangerous realities to face in future. People get married for lots of reasons, and children are not always even in the top 10. Then again you don't want married people to have children, you want married people to have LOTS of children, as many as their bodies are physically capable of producing. Yes, it is a bad thing. Aging population is also a bad thing because it's an inflection in the second derivative of growth. We're just starting to see the effects since 2000, in essentially flat market growth and drops in real value.

If you want to see poverty decrease, then yes, population should continue to rise. A population crunch like we see in Japan, Russia and now China will devastate their economies. This phenomenon spreading worldwide will have the same effect.

The alternative is death spiral. See Japan. Spiralling debt, smaller taxbase is a horrible way to go.
