Worldwide the present birthrate is just 2.4. We're closer to a population crunch with too few children than we are to a population explosion with too many.

Then why haven't we suffered that already? The UN's low prediction is actually rather robustly optimistic on future birthrates. I think in the next 10-15 years we'll actually see world population start to decline. Which means big problems for the economy. We're already seeing aging effects in China and Japan and in Russia.
