You're wrong about that. I have 3 branches that go back that far in Canada. One was born in Kingston back in 1752, even before the UEL came over, and two that were Loyalists.

They could only stay if they renounced their Oath of Allegiance to the Queen. So they could only stay by not being Loyalists anymore. Some did eventually return to the US, but the majority went to Canada and stayed there. Some went back to Britain, some went to the Caribbean.

But if they left, the Yankees seized whatever property they owned without compensation. They were 'traitors' for serving King over country.

So let's get this straight here. You are arguing that I must be a racist because I'm giving the confederacy an excuse? If I were racist, why would I bother making the argument that I did? One of your assertions is wrong. Either I'm not a racist, or the Confederacy isn't racist.

The facts of the matter are this. The respective state legislatures of all the confederate states voted to withdraw from the Union. Constitutionally, this was their right to do so. If they could enter into the union through a vote, then they can also leave by the same process. Thus, the war declared on them was a war of invasion and agression and the Southern states were right to take up arms in defense of their state.

This was Robert E Lee's argument, the man hand picked by Lincoln to lead the Union Army. Lee declined the appointment to serve with the Confederacy in defense of the liberty of his home state. Perhaps to you he's a racist and a traitor, but he is also your compatriot in the commonwealth of Virginia. Or perhaps they no longer teach this these days.

I'm not arguing that the South was right to keep slaves. Nor was the North right to keep slaves. Both kept slaves by right of their own constitution and if that had been expurged when the Union was first formed, then perhaps a great deal of bloodshed could have been averted. But alas, they loved their slaves more than they loved their liberty from that great tyrant King George who's son would later free both slaves and papists.
