I think I know where he is coming from. Even as an atheist, he still has arab mid-eastern cultural heritage, and Islam, in its dominance plays a strong part in it. To see someone, even though not of muslim middle-eastern heritage, converting, is in his unlogical subconscious, an act of betrayal.

I often find myself thinking similar thoughts about Jews converting to Christianity, even though I am an atheist/agnostic.
