And if they did, I would judge that person to have assimilated quite well by learning/working the system to try to get what he wants. Granted they probably wouldn't succeed at this point in time, but you never know in the future.

It's not a strawman, Imran. It's a legitimate question. I believe that anyone who prefers sharia should stay in their own country and not come to America. If you're going to come to America, you should want to live the way that she does.

I'm not so sanguine about the use of the courts to enforce against the will of the people in America. I think it's very likely that a case would be taken up, and ruled in favour of sharia. I expect to see it in a short time.

Actually Roman Catholics were forbidden to practice their religion, to vote, to hold certain public offices in Britain up until the Emancipation which wasn't until the early 19th century. So if you're using Catholics as an example of religious toleration, then you're well off base.

As for why Islam should be treated differently, just look at Sharia. Muslims don't want to assimilate into the broad culture, they want to bring their culture here, which is contrary to Western codes of justice. There's simply no compromise between the west and Sharia possible. If Muslims are willing to assimilate, but the problem is that they are not assimilating. At all.

The English did not enforce all of their church and culture on those they conquered, and did not force later new comers to drop everything they came with.

Uh, yeah they did, which is one of the reasons why the Americans wrote their constitution the way that they did.

When's the last time the people got a chance to vote on anything? Anytime big, controversial changes come through, they usually keep the people as far out of the decision as possible, so that the courts can enforce them. (Being unelected, natch). There's nothing that would require an actual election to get sharia instituted in the US, it could take as little as an EO, backed up by the courts.

Uh, again, the topic was the whole anglosphere, and yes, part of the reason that the laws were different in the US is because of the laws prior to emancipation in the UK which limited Catholic participation in public affairs, and actually made it a crime to be a priest in the UK.
