    Are you this naive?

The leaks show that the US government does all kinds of **** and pretends it's not them (see Yemen).

...What is your point? I don't see how this addresses what I've said at all.

They could have easily opted to not use Pentagon levels of bandwidth so that it wouldn't be quite so obvious that they did it.

I was going to ask this, but figured I just didn't know enough about computers and somebody would say "duh, they can just use the old 23X reroute exception trick" or something.

            I addressed this....

            1. I don't think DOD would care about people accusing them of doing it at all. I also don't think many foreign governments would care either, at least unofficially.
            2. I think DOD is a fair bit more capable than this DDOS would suggest.

You don't think the DOD would care if it was found they were shutting down a critical/embarrassing website by means of an illegal attack?

EDIT: I mean, hell, even mumbling something about terrorism and summarily shutting the site down with a court order or something sounds less outrageous than resulting to extralegal electronic shenanigans.

No, I don't. And if the site is hosted in another country, I'm not sure it's illegal, but I wouldn't know. I think that while a handful of countries might officially be "upset", they would in reality not really care, and given that the documents were stolen, could you really blame DOD for attempting to keep them secret?

                Granted this is just speculation.

Why shut the site down with an attack when you can shame the founder with his own actions (he's a rapist)?

Because, assuming that's true, it has no bearing on the leaked material and looks like a desperate attempt to draw attention away from it.

Frankly if he cared about shame he wouldn't have published this stuff.

These documents aren't like Pentagon Papers. They don't show the US government working against the interest of its citizens. All it does is reveal state secrets of the USA and make it more difficult for the government to do its job.

Such an action would raise the uncomfortable question, "If the government is within its legal rights to shut down this website, why didn't it employ its own justice system to do so instead of e-shanking the site like some hacker?"

There's not much that can be done about the leaked material unless the Feds somehow find out where Julian Assange has stored the documents not yet released and they are able to seize them.

edit: big x-post was laughing at HC, but while we're on the subject of laughable claims, that whole 'rape' story is so much bull****.

In addition to revealing state secrets such as our Secretary of State trying to snag Moon's fingerprints, it also contains snide low-level diplomat gossip and a number of giggle-inducing follies by various foreign poobahs. Whether offering millions in incentives to offload politically troublesome prisoners is in the United States' best interests is a matter of opinion. And I kinda want to know WTF that Afghan veep was doing with that much cash and why we didn't bother to find out.

                                He's an alleged rapist.
