OTH Governments seem to like "in commercial confidence" clauses to keep contracts secret from the voters. Or am I being a tad cynical?

HC I can see where Asher is coming from. The "need for secrecy" can be abused by guvmint to disinform the public. (Therefore it almost certainly will be).
HC's post is a massive strawman.

I believe US government employees, acting to form US foreign policies with far-ranging ramifications, ought to be held publicly accountable for their actions. They are representing the people, not ruling them.

That's not the same thing as saying the US should opensource the blueprints to nuclear weapons.

Has your brain developed enough to recognize obvious facetiousness?

In the interest of full disclosure, we do not actually possess something called Stealth Nation Technology either.

I'm surprised sugar isn't on your no-no list along with alcohol.

                    • Which is sadder, the authoritarian mindset in this country that prevents HC from legally buying alcohol or the fact that it doesn't matter?

edit: damn, beaten to the punch

I'm referring to your life dedicated to not wanting anything fun or enjoyable

When have I ever disagreed with reducing the drinking age?

I'm a bit offended that you think you know better than I what is fun and enjoyable.

Next you'll be saying the government should decide what people should find enjoyable. Authoritarianism

I think there are some things that need to be kept under wraps. I am also in favour of public accountability. The question is "where do we draw the line"? What is to secret and what is to be public?

I think we all agree that nuclear codes should be secret. We do not seem to agree whether treaty negotiations should be completely open. We might all agree that, if we were negotiating to buy something, we shouldn't disclose exactly how much we would pay thus eliminating the possibility of getting it at a lower price. Perhaps part of this argument is semantic. Where do we draw the line?

                              Happy birthday HC

It's probably only a matter of time before you do, given your track record.
