I've actually been threatened with termination by employers for doing what The Mad Monk did.

Apparently it has to do with an exempt employee doing non-exempt work, which can get the company in trouble with the Feds if it happens often enough.

This situation happens often enough in the chemical industry (being capital-heavy and labor-light), that most companies have a work-around involving declaring that employee temporarily non-exempt (and paying them overtime) for that time period.

Yeah but I was a non-exempt manager. I started off part-time so I was always hourly.

I remember when I was a development director for an overly top heavy insurance company, the life company called and asked for a new report. All my people were busy, so I looked at it and did it myself in about 15 minutes. The life company sent a gushing thank you to our VP saying this is what they consider great customer service. I got my butt ripped. I was told that my purpose was to sit in meeting and manage. I laughed so hard and told them that's probably why the groups didn't like dealing with them and quit the next week after I had lined up another job.

And I'm a firm believer that after 11 hours you start making mistakes that just make you work longer the next day. If you work 12 hours a day for any period of time, you'll burn out and not be effective.
Pretty much. When I worked for the store, they wanted me to keep to 8-4. I could finish my in pile by about 10 or so. So I used to just push through and get as much done as I could before I had to leave.

Then my boss would complain when I'd leave 15 minutes early after finishing up all I was going to get done that day. She wanted me to clock in and clock out right at the hour, despite the fact that my output was well above what they needed.

I asked her if I stayed an extra 15 minutes if I would be compensated for it. She said no. She'd be afraid of having to pay me overtime. So I told her, lets have a deal. I'll work and leave when I want to, and if I work late to get stuff done, then you don't have to pay overtime.

I don't understand why managers are so picky about the hours and not the output? Surely the output is more important?

She may have been constricted by the applicable labor laws.
I had that problem when I was managing an auto restoration shop. We had guys that worked on special projects after hours and would get paid a commission on them. The department of labor slammed us for it since we weren't paying them hourly overtime for their work.
We even tried to get around the rule by making the more experienced guys 'exempt' to be straight salary and the extra work would be compensated through a bonus. They shot that down too claiming that their job description didn't justify the designation.
So your old boss may have just been trying to avoid problems with the labor board.

KH has to work 26 hours a day, eats a lump of coal then gets beaten with a spiked bat (then has to suffer being hit on but New York skanks in the bar after work).

Umm... depends what you do... Go landscapping for 12 hours a day, dumbass.

Or every job I've ever had involved me standing all the time. Standing for 12 hours everyday leads to progressively achy feet and ankles.

Working 12 hours a day is doable. Working 12 hours a day for years on end is doable.

Doing so is retarded. You only get one life, don't waste it all working for the man.
