  • I'm not sure Laz would support stripping the COE of their privileged status. Perhaps we should ask if he's on board?

The article attacks only the Catholic church, it makes zero mention of the COE which is unsurprising.

    • Oh I'm sure he would be on board.

But with respect to religious schools the CofE doesn't have any special status compared to RCC. As has been pointed out many times in this thread. The article was commenting on RCC because of Pope's recent comments. Archbishop of Canterbury hasn't come out with anything along those lines recently. And hard to imagine he would, CofE is a much more modern thinking organisation in general.

Given the reasons for its founding, it's hard to imagine otherwise.

            • Fine Ben, so you understand that both CE and RC schools are treated the same, and agree that all faith schools should be privately funded.

              Splendid.

I believe that's only the case in Ontario and Manitoba.

It was a huge deal and it's part of the constitution in Manitoba, part of their provincial ratification. Ontario I believe added it later at public request, but I may be wrong about this.

                      • Catholic schools in Ontario were funded to Grade 10 until the early 80's. At that time Conservative Premier Davis extended full funding through to grade 13 and in the process ended his party's 42 year grip on power. It certainly wasn't at the public's request.

In a case of deja vu, Conservative candidate John Tory promised full funding to other religious schools in the last election campaign and promptly lost the election because of it.

The overwhelming preference in this province would be for a single taxpayer funded school system.

Were they always funded in Ontario? That I wasn't sure about. I know Manitoba had a case that went to the supremes that ruled they could fund Catholic schools but that was a long time ago.

Edit, ruled the opposite that they could not fund them.

Ok, That makes sense. 1870, they had a school system that was funded outright. The case went up later to remove it outright, which succeeded.

Ontario's school system dates to confederation. AFAIK, it's the only province now that funds Catholic schools throughout the province.

                          • I'm not sure Ben. I think up to Grade 10 was a Constitutional requirement (similar to Manitoba) but I could well be wrong.

                            • The problem we have now is that the current system is inherently unfair to other religious groups (what John Tory recognised and argued). The ideal solution would be to strip funding from the Catholic board and go to a single system however, politically it is easier to give more out to other groups than take away existing funding from the Catholic board.

                              • Well that's what happened in Quebec with theirs 10 years ago.

Right now, Quebec still has fully funded Catholic schools in Montreal and in Laval.

Alberta and Saskatchewan have a patchwork of Catholic schools.

Ontario has theirs, and I think that's it. So more then half of all Canadians live in jurisdictions which fund Catholic schools.
