It's quite possible that Jacob is a smoke monster too.

I was thinking that as well because it seems that Jacob needs each of them for a purpose. But I'm not convinced of it yet either.

Yeah, I immediately went to the same place as far as Jacob/Sayid...which, because it's obvious, is probably wrong.

I'll be pissed if it ends up being a "this whole show never happened" sort of ending, which is the feeling I got from the 2004 scenes.

Was it just me, or did the chains comment confirm not-Locke was Apophis?

Best sitcom end in the history of television.
BUT it wouldn't be as funny the second time.

It would totally blow everyone's mind, though.

Yeah, and when you "MERGE" time lines, while there maybe some crossover knowledge, one would be dominant in the merge making the other dreamlike

They've already stated that they aren't going to give it a dream or imagination-like ending.

There's no way they're going to do that; it would ruin the entire show. They realize that.

Okay, you're gonna have to explain that one. Who is Apophis, and what does he/she/it have to do with chains?

Wikipedia says that Apophis was an Egyptian devil who lived in the underworld and tried to capture Ra every night. No idea about the chains.

Thought the chains comment referred to Richard being a slave on the Black Rock. Or in a more figurative sense he no longer had to serve Jacob.

Apophis would make sense if Richard Alpert = Ra; still don't see how chains apply to Apophis, though.

Apophis was bound by chains after he tried to kill Ra. Still don't see the connection though.

As Flash says, Apophis was bound by chains every night because he tried to consume the sun, only to be fought off by Ra. Ra's assistants (who I'm slotting in as Batmanuel and friends) would hold his chains while Ra dismembered him. I'm thinking that not-Locke was Apophis, who certainly would have been a bit touchy about the subject of chains, particularly if he was talking to one of the people who used to hold him down. Also of note is that the smoke monster often has a definite snake-like form, like Apophis, and there are usually the sounds of chains while it moves.

Given the previous Egyptian references, it seems like the closest fit to me.

Ok, I probably should have looked that up before trying to work from memory, but he was held down by the children of Horus, who were more Ra's allies than assistants. But Apophis vs. Ra would definitely have the light/darkness duality that seems to be going on. Which would probably make Jacob (or possibly Batmanuel, but that seems unlikely since he didn't know who not-Locke was) Sacmis. Sacmis eventually was seen as more peaceful, which would make sense given Jacob's personality. Then again, Sacmis was female, so
