Yeah, if I have one complaint about the episode, its that we're introducing two brand new, apparently very important Others so late in the show."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine
"The subject of onanism is inexhaustable." --Sigmund Freud

Ahhh, but what we're seeing isn't exactly parallel.
The Dharma crew were blown clear into 2007; thus far, the alternate timeline we're seeing in taking place in 2004.
Probably meaningless."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine
"The subject of onanism is inexhaustable." --Sigmund Freud

It seems to me that we started viewing the alternate timeline in 2004 because it matched with the start of the show, and that the alternate timeline existed before that date and things were changing within it well before Flight 815 took off from Sydney. I would guess that things have been changing since 1977 in the alternate timeline (which was probably created when the nuke was set off at the Swan site).KH FOR OWNER!

Yeah, Des being on the plane is a tip that time has been diverting since '77. Or... what if Des wasn't on the plane? We didn't see anyone else interact with him; Rose and Bernard didn't see him because they were sleeping. What if that was original Jack's consciousness somehow seeping through? Especially given it was Desmond, the man whose consciousness is known to go on merry jaunts on its own from time to time (figuretively and literally).
We know they got blown to 2007 because Richard, et al., saw the signal flare sent up from the Temple."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine
"The subject of onanism is inexhaustable." --Sigmund Freud

People over at Entertainment Weekly are saying that they think Jacob has taken over Sayid's body, but I don't really see it.

Plus the sunken Island with Dharmaville and the broken statue present. It shows how crazy awesome the rest of the premiere was that I kind of forgot about the sunken island opening...

Plus Jacob told Hurley that he had just died.KH FOR OWNER!

The life/death thing was even bigger than usual in this episode. I didn't dwell too much on Christian being missing, much like I didn't dwell too much on Sayid reanimating at the end, but, as far as we know Des is alive in the alternate timeline, why should he get to jump around?
Also, I bet my wife that RealLocke would reanimate before Sayid. I lost. The undeserving maintain power by promoting hysteria.

A lot of people think there's something uniquely special about Desmond (as has been explicitly stated on the show in the past) as a result of turning the failsafe key in the Hatch that makes him the only one capable of reuniting the two timelines. It's not unthinkable that this specialness might also allow him to flash between both timelines as he used to flash through time.KH FOR OWNER!

Yeah, I'm probably being too literal with Des being on the plane, but they're going to explain Christian and Remy and the horse on the island quite literally, so I assumed that Des was really "there" by time travel or whatever, and not just a true timeline flashback by Jack
I also doubt that Jacob as possessed Sayid -- Smokey didn't possess lock, he just impersonated him, and the two seem to be yin-yang twin-opposites.The undeserving maintain power by promoting hysteria.

I'm more inclined to believe that Des is the new Jacob, rather than Sayid.
There is going to be something very, very wrong with Zombie Sayid, though. "There are risks." The water was muddy. Miles appeared to be scared ****less. Perhaps he has been annointed as Smokey's equivalent of Richard?"My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine
